RUGBY UNION - Coventry Rugby score last gasp try to win thriller at Doncaster Knights

Coventry raced into an early lead through tries from Jack Reeves and Alex Garrett while Jordon Poole also touched down before the break.

Doncaster crossed twice in the first period through Will McCarthy and Ben Sugars before Penaia Tagutu dotted down early in the second period for the Knights.

The teams continued to trade tries as Senitiki Nayalo touched down for Coventry while Tom Curtis and Tagutu both crossed for the home side to put Doncaster in front.

However, Stanton-Ford levelled the scores with a try on 79 minutes and Mathews held his nerve from the kicking tee to earn Rae’s side a dramatic late victory.

The result means Coventry sit third in the Champ Rugby table, five points behind leaders Worcester Warriors.

And the visitors struck again on 13 minutes when Garrett gathered Mathews’ kick over the top of the Doncaster defence and dotted down.

However, Doncaster halved the deficit on 21 minutes as McCarthy intercepted a pass and raced to the line which Curtis converted.

Coventry restored their two-score advantage on 32 minutes when Poole after the visitors stretched the Doncaster defence.

But the Knights hit back five minutes later as Sugars crossed and Curtis converted to cut Coventry’s lead to five points at the break.

And Doncaster drew level seven minutes after half time when Tagutu scored his first try of the game.

However, Coventry reclaimed the lead on 51 minutes as Nayalo dotted down and Mathews converted.

But Doncaster came back again to level the scores on 55 minutes when Curtis converted his own try following sustained pressure on the Coventry line.

And the Knights took the lead on 66 minutes as Tagutu scored his second try of the game to put Doncaster into a five-point lead.

However, Coventry scored a fifth try at the death when Stanton-Ford powered over from close range and Mathews nailed the conversion.

Coventry are next in action against Ampthill on Saturday, October 31 with kick-off at 1pm at the Nick Newbold Stadium.
