A wreck for second place turned into one of NASCAR's biggest post-race brawls in years Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway, and the fallout has since spilled into the personal lives of both drivers.
The NASCAR incident began on Lap 458 of the Bass Pro Shops Night Race when Hocevar, racing for second, crossed over in front of Blaney, who moved low to block. Contact sent Blaney's No. 12 Ford into the wall, ending his night in 33rd place and dropping him to sixth in the Chase standings, 52 points back.
Blaney was furious afterward. "I tried to protect the bottom, he crossed and never lifted, and I got crashed," Blaney said. Hocevar, who went on to finish third, offered a different account of the contact. "I kind of crossed him over there, and I felt like I was at least at his left rear, and it looked like he just kept coming down. I was on the brakes pretty hard, and he obviously spun."
Hocevar responded immediately with two overhand rights, the first knocking off Blaney's hat, the second connecting with his cheek and sending him to the ground. Blaney got back up and attempted to charge Hocevar again, landing a glancing blow that knocked off Hocevar's hat, before team members separated the two.
"There wasn't a whole lot of talking," Hocevar said. "He just kind of said one thing and then went after me, and I wasn't going to take it... They got an old-school Bristol show here."

Hocevar also acknowledged it was the first time he'd ever thrown a punch. "I don't know if he tripped on somebody or I got a decent one in. I've never thrown one."
Despite winning the exchange, Hocevar said he understood Blaney's anger given the championship stakes. "I understand why he's upset. That's probably his championship. So I understand 100 percent. And I'd probably be mad at me, too. Whether it was his mistake, my mistake, my fault or not, I'd be pretty pissed if I was him."
Blaney, for his part, made clear before the fight that tensions with Hocevar had been building. "I haven't had a problem with him for probably a year and a half, but it's getting old," he said, adding cryptically that "something is going to happen."
In the aftermath, Blaney's wife, Gianna Blaney, a former Miss Hooters International titleholder, posted a pointed comment in response to the incident on Instagram.
The comment saw Blaney make a damning accusation which has not been proven or has any public history. Hocevar's representatives have been contacted for comment.
Joey Logano ultimately won the race after Hocevar and Ty Gibbs battled for the lead in the closing laps, but the victory was overshadowed by the fight. "I'm sure I'll see it all week long," Logano said. "They'll probably forget who won the race."
NASCAR is expected to review the incident and determine whether penalties are warranted, with a decision likely coming Tuesday.
