Scoring twice nets Revolution’s Peyton Miller MLS Player of the Matchday

Good news continues to roll in for Revolution winger Peyton Miller. Days after being called into camp for the US men’s national team for the first time, he scored twice in New England’s 4-2 win over Orlando City on Saturday, a performance that earned the 18-year-old MLS Player of the Matchday for games played last weekend.

Saturday marked the Connecticut native’s first brace. He already has set career highs with seven goals and four assists.

Miller gave the Revolution a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute, running onto a pass from Dor Turgeman for a breakaway.

After Orlando pulled even at 2 on a penalty given for a Miller handball in the box, he put the Revolution back in front in the 93rd, receiving a pass from Diego Fagundez and finishing just inside the far post.

Teammate Carles Gil, who also scored twice Saturday, was runner-up.

Miller joins Alhassan Yusuf as the only Revolution players to take Player of the Matchday honors this season. Yusuf was recognized after scoring a hat trick in New England’s 3-0 win at D.C. United on Aug. 19.

The Revolution (14-8-4, 46 points) sit second in the Eastern Conference heading into Saturday’s game at Real Salt Lake, for which they’ll be deeply shorthanded. Miller and teammate Brooklyn Raines will not be available because of the United States friendly against Peru in Orlando; Ilay Feingold and Turgeman will be with Israel for four UEFA Nations League games; and Yusuf and Jack Harrison are likely lost to injuries through October.

Miller and Raines are expected to remain with the national team through friendlies against Chile (Sept. 29, St. Louis) and Mexico (Oct. 3, Glendale, Ariz.). After Saturday, the Revolution next play Oct. 10, when they’ll host Seattle.
