“She’s the best player” – NY Liberty Coach Chris DeMarco Throws Breanna Stewart Into MVP Conversation Ahead Of WNBA Award Season

As the 2026 WNBA regular season approaches season-end awards, the New York Liberty are promoting Breanna Stewart for MVP honors. The forward is coming off an awesome 2026 FIBA World Cup campaign, in which she won the MVP award. Now, Liberty coach Chris DeMarco also put forward Stewart’s case for the award.
Stewart has stacked the stat sheet this season as well, averaging 20.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. She has carried the Liberty on her back and is one of the contenders for the MVP title.
DeMarco hailed the team’s superstar for the award, according to a Sunday X post from Underdog WNBA:
“Stewie’s the MVP. You could even see it in World Cup play, what she means to teams when she’s on the floor. She’s an absolute winner … She’s the best player in the WNBA.”
Stewart has led the scoring this season and is one of the names in the MVP conversation, with Kelsey Mitchell, A’ja Wilson and Olivia Miles. She led the team to a 93-81 win at the Minnesota Lynx, with 24 points and 10 rebounds, on Friday.
The Liberty (25-16) did a great job against the WNBA-leading Lynx (31-10) in the last game, limiting Olivia Miles to just 5-for-18 shooting. Breanna Stewart talked about the matchup in the postgame news conference and detailed how the Liberty worked to stop Miles.
“Listen, you can ask probably any guard in the league; they don’t want to be picked up 94 feet, and the fact that we rotated between the three of Leo (Leonie Fiebich), Bek (Rebeka Gardner) and Pauline (Astier).”
Stewart and Co. will face the Toronto Tempo and then play the Atlanta Dream for a couple of games before the regular season ends.
