Indian captain Shreyas Iyer created multiple records as he scored a 42-ball century to help the hosts thrash West Indies by eight wickets with 32 balls to spare on Tuesday (October 6) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The 31-year-old made an unbeaten 43-ball 101 to ensure the Men in Blue took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series as they returned to action just about 48 hours after winning the Asian Games gold medal in Japan with a victory against Pakistan.
This marked Shreyas' first century in T20I cricket for India, as well as his first while leading a side in international cricket. Incredibly, it came at the same venue, where he got his maiden IPL century earlier this year for Punjab Kings (PBKS) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
1 - Shreyas has become the first Indian captain in history to score a century in a T20I while chasing. Each of the other four tons by a Men in Blue skipper in the shortest format came while batting first. The previous highest individual score by a player while leading the world champions in this format was by Virat Kohli (94*) against West Indies in 2019 at Hyderabad.
Centuries by Indian Captains in T20Is
102 - Shreyas Iyer has become only the second captain to score a century from number six or below against a full-member nation and the first to do so while chasing. The only other player to achieve the feat is Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian captain broke his predecessor's record for the most runs in an innings by a captain who walked out to bat after the loss of the second wicket or lower. Meanwhile, Shreyas has become the first skipper to bat at number four or below to score a ton against the West Indies.
Most Runs From Number Four Or Below By A Captain in T20Is Against Full-Member Teams
43- Shreyas Iyer's 42-ball century is the joint second-quickest by a captain and joint-fastest by a non-opener captain in T20Is alongside Harry Brook's 42-ball ton against Sri Lanka last month in Southampton. Only Rohit Sharma, with a 35-ball ton against Sri Lanka, reached the three-figure mark quicker while leading his team in T20Is. It is also the quickest by a captain against West Indies. The record was previously held by Faf Du Plessis, who hit a 46-ball ton against the two-time world champions in 2015 at Johannesburg.
