'Shut up' — John McEnroe faced criticism after US Open commentary booth stint

John McEnroe remains a staple presence in the commentary booth at this year's US Open, despite vocal criticism from frustrated viewers during last year's tournament.

The American tennis icon provided analysis for Carlos Alcaraz's triumph over Jannik Sinner in the 2025 final. During that showdown, numerous spectators flocked to social media platforms calling for the candid analyst to step away permanently.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who hung up his racket in 1992, has since built an impressive reputation as a broadcaster. McEnroe has become well-known for his unfiltered commentary style. While his passion and direct approach resonate with some viewers, others have expressed frustration.

Throughout last year's final, fans voiced their displeasure online.

One viewer commented: "John McEnroe is irritating af to listen to," while another questioned: "Do either (McEnroe's brother and commentator) Patrick or John McEnroe know how to shut up during a point?"

A third viewer noted: "The bias of McEnroe as a commentator makes me turn the volume down," and yet another remarked: "Wish McEnroe would shut up with his chatter and musings and let us watch the tennis game."

McEnroe evidently ignored those suggestions, as he's been a prominent presence at Flushing Meadows this season.

Yet he won't have the opportunity to call another Alcaraz championship match in New York this time around.

The Spanish sensation couldn't replicate his previous year's success, falling to American rising star Ben Shelton in Wednesday's quarterfinal clash.

The title holder went down in a match tiebreak, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, following an epic four hours and 28 minutes of play.

The grueling five-set battle concluded at 3.33 am local time, marking the tournament's latest-ever finish.

This US Open marked Alcaraz's comeback after a four-and-a-half-month absence, sidelined by a wrist injury that kept him out of both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Following his exit from Arthur Ashe Stadium, he opted to highlight the silver linings rather than dwell on the setback, sharing his thoughts on social media. The seven-time major champion wrote: "What a battle Ben!

"You deserve the win, I wish you the best for the rest of the tournament. I leave here happy with my level after such a long injury. Thank you for the energy NYC! Always a very special place!"
