Six centuries scored in record ODI matches across three continents

Cricket fans witnessed a record six centuries in men’s One Day Internationals (ODIs) on September 28, across three separate matches around the world, marking the highest number of centuries scored in a single day in ODI history.

In the opening match between India and West Indies at Thiruvananthapuram, Justin Greaves scored his maiden ODI century, reaching 101 runs off 108 balls with 12 boundaries to help West Indies post 295 for 7. In response, Indian captain Shubman Gill notched his 10th ODI century, scoring 110 from 108 balls, including 13 fours and a six. Virat Kohli followed with an unbeaten 139 from 88 deliveries, featuring 12 fours and nine sixes. Kohli’s innings marked his 86th international century and 55th in ODIs. He joined the exclusive 15,000-run ODI club, becoming only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to achieve this milestone.

At Johannesburg, the second ODI between South Africa and Australia, also known as the Pink ODI to raise awareness for breast cancer, saw David Miller deliver a career-best 142 runs off 93 balls, with 12 fours and nine sixes. South African captain Temba Bavuma added his fifth ODI century, scoring 103 runs from 110 balls. South Africa posted 365 for 9. Miller’s performance further cemented his successful record against Australia, accumulating 1,184 runs in 28 innings at an average of 59.2 and a strike rate near 107, including four centuries and six half-centuries. He surpassed Jonty Rhodes with his 31st innings of 50-plus runs batting at number five or below and equalled Jos Buttler’s record of eight ODI centuries at the same batting position. Miller also recorded his fourth century against Australia, second only to Faf du Plessis’ five centuries in 21 innings. Despite a strong 130-run opening partnership between Mitchell Marsh (84) and Travis Head (84), Australia were all out for 333 in 49.5 overs, with Lizaad Williams taking three wickets and Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj two wickets each.

The third ODI, a series decider between England and Sri Lanka at The Oval, featured Tom Banton’s maiden ODI century. Banton scored 126 runs off 105 balls, including 16 fours and five sixes, at a strike rate of 120. Alongside captain Harry Brook’s 77 from 66 balls, they compiled a 150-run partnership that propelled England to a commanding total of 355 for 7. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 132 in 29.1 overs, with Liam Dawson taking three wickets.

These performances in India, South Africa, and England underscore the continuing appeal and competitive spirit of ODI cricket, demonstrating its resilience amid growing preference for T20 formats and the World Test Championship in the international cricket calendar.
