'Some of them hit a winner and act like hahaha and I'm thinking 'who do you think you are'' - Daniil Medvedev offers his opinion on handing out tennis advice

'Some of them hit a winner and act like hahaha and I'm thinking 'who do you think you are'' - Daniil Medvedev offers his opinion on handing out tennis advice

Daniil Medvedev has made the trip to Kazakhstan in an attempt to defend his Almaty Open title and continue his fine recent form in Asia. He has produced a string of eye-catching results and deep runs in the last few weeks, and following his latest win, he has come forward to state his opinions on asking for and handing out advice in tennis.

Following his last-16 exit at the US Open, Medvedev has been playing as much as he possibly can and is getting the rewards for this. He won the Hangzhou Open title against good friend Andrey Rublev while dropping just one set in the entire tournament before what should have been a very commendable semi-final result at the China Open was overshadowed with him being defaulted against Novak Djokovic.

His points were taken away from him as the Russian gazed nervously at the ATP Race standings. However, he has since bolstered his position with a semi-final at the Shanghai Masters, losing out to eventual runner-up Rafael Jodar.

He is not stopping for a breather, continuing his run of tournaments at the Almaty Open. He defeated Corentin Moutet in the final last time out, and he is the big favourite to defend his title and confirm a fourth ATP title in 2026.

After his opening match victory against Sho Shimabukuro in a resounding 6-2, 6-1 scoreline, Medvedev was asked in his press conference on how these different generations have an impact on each other. Medvedev, being 30, is among a more established crop of players who have had success on the big stage on a regular occasion and holds a wealth of knowledge.

"I guess I am not that kind of person for anyone, but I do sometimes try to help younger players," he said. "If there is a young player that I like as a person, I might offer to help because they are all different."

He outlined someone he would specifically avoid. "Some of them hit a winner and act like hahaha and I'm thinking 'who do you think you are.' But there are others and I will say just to them 'listen, if you have any questions let me know.'"

From handing out advice to getting some himself, the former US Open champion is not all ears to this prospect. "I really don't like people who give me advice when I haven't asked for. There are people like that. So I don't want to be that kind of person myself. If you ever need any help just let me know but again right now I don't think there is anyone like that."

He noted Djokovic as one of the standout figures who regularly gives out free advice, including to the Russian himself. "As far who helped me, well Novak helped me out once, involving the Davis Cup and the private jet. Novak is actually someone who really enjoys helping young players and of course who won 24 Grand Slam titles. I'm pretty sure someone would appreciate it if I offered help."

Medvedev continues to plough on in Kazakhstan. It is crucial times with the ATP Finals fast approaching. After missing out last year, the 2020 champion will be hopeful of making a return to the showpiece event in Turin. He sits sixth, 300 points ahead of Jodar.

It is yet to be seen how crucial those docked points in Beijing could be with still plenty of tennis to be played. Medvedev will soon turn his attention to the Vienna Open and Paris Masters with more lucrative points up for grabs in a bid for Turin.

For the time being, the focus is on the Almaty Open, in which he is now in the semi-finals after a commanding 6-4, 6-4 victory against Terence Atmane. A blockbuster encounter against the home favourite Alexander Bublik or Karen Khachanovc will be next.
