Son Heung-min hailed as 'money very well spent' for MLS and LAFC

Shaka Hislop believes Son Heung-min is “money very well spent” for MLS and LAFC, marrying on-field impact with commercial pull. He has 19 goals and an All-Star appearance since arriving.
The South Korea forward moved to the United States in August 2025 after 10 years at Tottenham, leaving as a Europa League-winning captain who ended a 17-year drought. Speaking to Goal.com, Hislop said Son offers value as an investment and as a player.
He was tasked with making a Messi-like impact, yet at 34 matching the Argentine on the field was always going to be difficult. Hislop argued Son still has more than enough to compete in MLS and is helping open the Asian market, particularly in Los Angeles. Sharing a city with MLB star Shohei Ohtani has also broadened interest.
Son embraces that responsibility. “I know that people want to listen or people want to see a lot of things with what I do, and I'm very open to it,” he said. “I try to make time as much as I can. I really take that responsibility.”
He added that he tries to be himself, saying, “I try to be humble. I try to be grateful to the people that always give me support.” His love of the game is being embraced in the United States, and his contract carries extension options that could keep him there through 2029.
