Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has spent the season spacing the floor with elite three-point shooting. She has delivered consistent production off the bench and built a strong personal brand along the way. Yet her role has shrunk in recent games, and that shift has sparked fresh questions about what comes next.

Cunningham logged just seven minutes in Sunday’s 93-77 home loss to the Washington Mystics. She finished with zero points, zero rebounds and zero assists on 0-of-2 shooting. The limited look marked a season low and continued a quieter stretch after the World Cup break. She previously exploded for a season-high 24 points in one standout outing, but those nights have grown rarer.

WNBA analyst and SiriusXM host Robin Lundberg addressed the situation after the Mystics game in a post that quickly drew attention.

“Sophie Cunningham was basically benched in the Fever’s loss to the Mystics,” Lundberg said.

He expanded on the moment in further comments.

“If I had to predict, Sophie Cunningham is not on the Indiana Fever next year. And there’s a chance she is not in the league next year,” he added.

“Sophie has been a really good shooter. She’s been a productive player. She’s been a good player. But when you indicate practices are too tough, and then you play seven minutes the next game, people are gonna go, ‘hmm.’ The coach calls out the defense and the rebounding, that’s something you gotta look in the mirror about.”

Cunningham is playing out a one-year, $665,000 contract she signed in April. She becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2027 after choosing Indiana over multi-year offers elsewhere.

Cunningham has already built a visible post-playing foundation. She co-hosts a podcast with trainer Drew Hanlen and has made high-profile appearances, including a turn as a UFC ring girl during a major card.

“She’s laying the groundwork for her post playing career now on the podcast. Obviously, she’s extraordinarily popular, and she’s really good at it, giving her unfiltered take, she’s really good at it. No team wants to constantly be talking about what one of the players said. Especially, when it is a role player,” Lundberg noted.

The Fever sit in the playoff picture with two regular-season games left. Cunningham has averaged roughly eight points per game this season while ranking among the league’s better three-point shooters. She has also drawn attention for viral moments and media work throughout the year. Still, the combination of a short contract, recent minutes, and the analyst’s assessment has shifted the conversation toward 2027.

Whether Indiana tries to retain her or other teams pursue her remains open. Cunningham has repeatedly said she values the Fever group and wants longer security when free agency opens. The coming weeks could shape how the organization and the market respond once the season ends.
