MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — The Southern Maryland BMX community is mourning the loss of Shawn McKinley Martin, 49, of Elkridge, who died Sunday, October 18, 2026, at his home.

Martin, a devoted husband, father and longtime supporter of BMX racing, was known for his generosity, encouragement and willingness to help others. His sudden death has prompted an outpouring of remembrance from friends and fellow riders.

Southern Maryland BMX (SOMDBMX) announced plans to honor Martin during its race Saturday, October 24, 2026, with a moment of silence, an opportunity for friends and fellow riders to share memories, and a fundraiser to support his family.

Martin was affectionately known as a “gentle giant” among those who knew him. His involvement in BMX racing brought him close to families and riders throughout Maryland, where he became a familiar presence at tracks and competitions.

SOMDBMX remembered Martin as someone who consistently placed his family and friends first.

The organization invited riders, families and friends to attend Saturday’s race to celebrate his life and reflect on his years of involvement in the sport.

Riders will also collect donations during the event to help Martin’s family with expenses and other needs during this difficult time.

Martin’s involvement in BMX began through his children.

He supported his son, Seth-Michael, as he explored several sports, including dirt biking, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, football and BMX racing.

When his daughter, Emma, developed an interest in BMX, the sport became an even greater part of the family’s life.

Before long, weekends were spent traveling to BMX tracks, where Martin became a familiar and welcoming presence.

The family’s home track was Chesapeake BMX in Severn, and Martin and Emma also developed close friendships through Factory Alltow, a BMX racing team.

At races, Martin was known for helping riders of all ages and experience levels, offering guidance, encouragement and support whenever someone needed it.

His involvement extended beyond watching his children compete. He developed friendships with other BMX families and became someone fellow riders could count on, whether they needed advice, assistance or simply encouragement after a difficult race.

A memorial tribute shared within the BMX community described Martin as someone who always had others’ backs and highlighted the pride he took in his daughter Emma.

Martin spent his life in Elkridge, growing up in the Harwood neighborhood and eventually moving next door to his childhood home.

He graduated from Howard High School in 1995 and maintained close friendships with many people he had known since childhood.

His passion for motorsports began at an early age, including trips to motocross events where he helped as a pit crew member and mechanic.

Martin also spent 19 years working at Cancun Cantina, where he was known for looking out for the safety of patrons and developing lasting friendships with coworkers.

Throughout his career, he worked in several industries, including positions at Culligan Bottled Water and ThompsonGas. His final position was with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Outside of work, Martin enjoyed watching Supercross, cheering for the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles, and spending time with family and friends.

Above all, family remained the center of his life.

Martin was married to his wife, Katherine “Katie” Vint Martin, for 25 years. He was the father of Seth-Michael W. Vint and Emma Carol Martin and had recently become a grandfather to River L. Vint.

He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Aysia Vint, his mother, Betty Martin, and numerous extended family members and friends.

Southern Maryland BMX hopes Saturday’s gathering will bring together the people whose lives Martin touched throughout his years around the sport.

Attendees will have an opportunity to share stories, remember his contributions to the BMX community and support his family through donations collected during the race.

Friends and family are also invited to gather Friday, October 23, 2026, at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge, with visitation scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

For the BMX community, Saturday’s tribute will offer an opportunity to remember Martin’s kindness, his dedication to his family and the friendships he built over years of supporting riders at tracks throughout the region.
