Star Wars Meets Super Bowl 2027: Disney Unveils Animated Funday Football With C-3PO

The upcoming Super Bowl LXI of 2027 is set to be an event like no other as Lucasfilm’s popular golden robot, C-3PO, makes a special appearance in the wide-ranging ESPN broadcasting of the big event. Star actor Anthony Daniels will bring back his popular character for a live animated show titled “Star Wars Funday Football.” The special broadcast, scheduled for Sunday, February 14, 2027, on the Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and ESPN apps, will bring the entire big game right into the popular intergalactic space series universe. The special viewing event is one out of six produced by Disney for the big game and designed especially for various viewers through multiple channels, including ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU.
To deliver such a revolutionary galactic broadcast, Disney will rely on cutting-edge technological innovations to reimagine live sports entertainment. In real-time, the live action from the stadium will be converted into animated avatars through the seamless integration of data from the NFL’s Next Gen Stats and Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking system. All runs, passes, and tackles will be converted instantly into avatars on screen, enabling famous Star Wars characters to join the gridiron action when the moment calls for it, while hidden objects and film references emerge throughout the game.
In celebration of its return to broadcasting the National Football League (NFL) championship game after almost two decades of absence, Disney has chosen a “megacast” distribution format, which is characterized by an extensive range of broadcast options. In addition to the main broadcast that will take place on ABC and ESPN, the sports fan can choose either the “Field Pass,” which features commentary by Pat McAfee, or the more informal conversation between brothers Peyton and Eli Manning on ESPN2’s “ManningCast.”
