Super League Grand Final build-up: Wakefield Trinity owner Matt Ellis left ‘shocked and speechless’ after Wigan Warriors display

Matt Ellis has revealed he was left “speechless” last Saturday after watching Wakefield Trinity produce one of Super League’s greatest-ever performances against Wigan Warriors.
Super League Grand Final build-up: Wakefield Trinity owner Matt Ellis left ‘shocked and speechless’ after Wigan Warriors display

Trin’s 33-6 dismantling of the treble-chasers, in their own back yard, included an eye-wateringly majestic 95 per cent set completion rate, as Daryl Powell’s men roared into their first-ever Grand Final.

Trinity owner Ellis told the Express: “It’s not often I’m a little bit shocked and speechless but I couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t just the win, it was the manner of the win and the performance. It was absolutely outstanding.

“Matt Peet said we would beat anybody in the world playing like that. It was just awesome from start to finish. If you have 100 per cent set completions in a half and 90 percent in the other half, then you are not going to lose.

“It is unheard of to get those statistics. But we got those set completion stats whilst playing good, expansive rugby. It was unbelievable. I was so proud they turned Wigan’s pack over and we beat them in every area.”

Over 4,000 fans made the journey to the Brick Community Stadium, with, at least, an anticipated 16,000-strong red, white and blue army heading to the Theatre of Dreams for this Saturday’s showpiece occasion with Warrington Wolves.

“Our fans were out of this world at Wigan,” Ellis proudly said. “It was the loudest rugby crowd I had ever heard. I went onto the field before the game and gave the fans applause for coming in such numbers.

“You could tell it was electric an hour before kick off and you knew they were up for it. We out sang them and we out fought them. We wanted it so much more than they did.”
