Team USA inched closer to the gold medal game at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup with a resounding victory over Hungary.
The Americans turned on the style in a 108-56 quarterfinal rout over Hungary on Thursday morning and moved one step closer to securing their fifth straight FIBA World Cup gold medal and 12th overall title. Five players scored in double digits Thursday, including Caitlin Clark, as Team USA poured in 108 points and tallied 31 assists, both of which are records for a World Cup quarterfinal game.
Clark and co. will now face the winner of Australia vs. Spain in the World Cup semifinal on Saturday in Berlin.
Since escaping a scare against Italy in the group stage, the Americans have been cruising.
Now, following back-to-back wins by 41 and 52 points over the Czech Republic and Hungary, USA’s chances at securing the gold medal have improved quite a bit from where they were after the narrow 55-52 win over Italy on Sept. 6, when they dropped to around 70 percent.
According to probabilities on prediction market Kalshi, Team USA now has an 87 percent chance to win the gold medal at the 2026 FIBA World Cup. The only other country with a probability greater than one percent is France at 19 percent.
The French team has also been impressive at the tournament, winning all four of its games by an average margin of victory of 39 points, including a 90-61 blowout of China in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The US beat China by a similar margin, 94-61, in their Group D opener on Sept. 4.
Coming into the FIBA World Cup, many anticipated that France and the United States would match up in the gold medal game.
Both still have to win their semifinal matchups, but all signs point to that matchup coming to fruition in a few days' time.
Led by Golden State Valkyries duo Gabby Williams and Janelle Salaun, France has no shortage of WNBA talent on its roster.
Team USA, however, has a de facto All-Star team that should be favored by a fair margin to beat France should they meet up with the gold medal on the line.
