Tennis LIVE: Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai Masters 'bet' as Wuhan Open wrecked by withdrawals

Express Sport brings you all the action from the Shanghai Masters and the Wuhan Open.
Tennis LIVE: Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai Masters 'bet' as Wuhan Open wrecked by withdrawals

The Shanghai Masters continues, and there have been plenty of upsets. Carlos Alcaraz suffered his earliest-ever exit in Shanghai, losing 7-5 7-6(4) to Zizou Bergs. The second seed looked uncomfortable throughout the contest, and vented his frustrations towards his team throughout the match, becoming especially animated towards the end of the first set. Alcaraz's loss means that Alexander Zverev is guaranteed to become the year-end No. 1 by the end of the season.

Fellow top seeds Arthur Fils and Taylor Fritz also crashed out on Monday. Fritz suffered a 3-6 7-5 6-3 defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas, and there was a bizarre incident as the American served to stay in the match at 2-5 in the decider. A ball fell out of his pocket twice in a row, including while he was match point down, and the umpire had to step in, deciding when to replay the last rally or when to award someone a point.

Alex de Minaur has already booked his spot in the round of 16, beating Rei Sakamoto on Sunday, just five days after he was forced to retire in the middle of the China Open final while facing Novak Djokovic. As the ninth seed, the Aussie got a bye directly into round two and was expected to play his opening match here on Friday. But his opponent, Alex Molcan, withdrew, giving De Minaur a walkover – and two extra days to prepare for his next match. And he admitted that the extra rest did him good.

On the WTA Tour, it’s day one of the Wuhan Open, but the tournament has been hit by several high-profile withdrawals. Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff pulled out ahead of the event, while Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova announced her withdrawal over the weekend. Now, China Open champion Qinwen Zheng and runner-up Mirra Andreeva have both pulled out after playing their final in Beijing. Anna Kalinskaya is also out, so five lucky losers have made it into the draw.

Aryna Sabalenka is motivated to regain top spot in the WTA rankings after losing her position to Elena Rybakina.

She said: "I love it. It’s a healthy rivalry, and I feel that not only the two of us, but all the players, push each other to improve.

"Sometimes you drop in the rankings, lose points, or a final, but that’s how you learn.

"For me, this season has been about learning from tough losses and using them as motivation to improve, find new ways to progress, and try to get back to the top. I’m really enjoying this rivalry."

Pole vault star Mondo Duplantis showed no hesitation when presented with a bizarre hypothetical involving Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Asked which player he would rely on if the fate of the planet depended on a single choice, the world-record holder immediately backed Sinner.

He said: "I choose Sinner. Jannik is a friend of mine, so the choice has to be him."

Zizou Bergs had lost his previous matches against multi-Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner.

But he beat Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai on Monday, and then admitted that he had "too much respect" for the top guys in the past, which made it difficult to beat them.

"It’s nice. This is something that has been very tough for me. I often have too much respect for these guys, which is part of the culture and I’m proud of that, but it’s a little bit in the way when you have to play them," the 27-year-old said.

"I think I had a great moment here last year against Djokovic, where I was definitely playing the name, not the guy. And the more experience you have by practising against them, playing matches, the more it becomes the new standard a little bit on the tour."

Over on Grandstand, we've just seen another big upset.

No. 8 seed Arthur Fils is out, suffering a 7-5 6-4 defeat to dangerous Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. He smashed his racket again as he lost.

It brings Fils' seven-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level to an end. The Frenchman won the biggest title of his career in Cincinnati in August, but it won't be back-to-back Masters crowns for him.

We've now seen nine of the top 16 seeds, and 20 of the total 32 seeds, crash out. And we've not even started the fourth round.

Alexander Zverev will officially become the year-end No. 1 by the end of the 2026 season.

When Jannik Sinner brought his own season to an early end, it was all but set that Zverev would clinch that year-end No. 1 position.

But with Carlos Alcaraz losing in the third round of the Shanghai Masters, it is now mathematically guaranteed that Zverev will be top man come the end of the season, as nobody can surpass him in the race.

Zverev is also set to climb to world No. 1 at some point between then and now. For now, he's still the No. 2. But he knows he'll be atop the standings when the year is over.

Zizou Bergs has admitted that his shock win over Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t sunk in yet. The world No. 43 earned the biggest win of his career, beating the third seed 7-5 7-6(4) in the third round of the Shanghai Masters, and said: “It’s a little bit of both. Disbelief and not feeling too much.

“It feels like one of the moments you don’t really realise it’s going on, you’re just really in the moment, being focused on the points you have to play. Yeah, I think we’re now one minute after the match, so it’s tough to calm down a little bit, but I will be very happy!”

Carlos Alcaraz has been dumped out of the Shanghai Masters in the third round.

Zizou Bergs earned the biggest win of his career over the world No. 3, coming through 7-5 7-6 to reach the last 16 here for the second year running.

Alcaraz never seemed to settle and continued dialogue with his team around the conditions of the balls and courts.

It’s a quick court in Shanghai this year, something the Spaniard admitted after his last match that he had to adjust to.

But he looked uncomfortable throughout Monday’s contest, and has suffered his earliest-ever loss here.

Alcaraz fought back when Bergs served for the match a few minutes ago, breaking to force a tiebreak.

But he was the first to blink, sending a ball long to give the world No. 43 an early mini-break.

Bergs double-faulted to give Alcaraz the mini-break back, but the Spaniard pushed a backhand wide to hand his opponent another advantage.

And on his first match point, Bergs fired down an ace to seal victory, raising his arms in the air and sending Alcaraz packing.

We're going to a tiebreak.

Zizou Bergs served for the match at 6-5, but he's just been broken by Carlos Alcaraz, netting the ball on the Spaniard's first break point.

Alcaraz is pumped. He's touching his ear and waving his arms in the air to get the crowd going. They were cheering for him anyway, and it's only getting louder.

Are we on the verge of a seisemic upset here in Shanghai?

Zizou Bergs has just broken Carlos Alcaraz to serve for the match at 6-5 in the second set.

The Belgian also broke at the same stage in the opener, and needed four set points to claim the first set, but he still got it done.

He'll now serve for the biggest win of his career.

No. 8 seed Arthur Fils is in some trouble.

He's just been broken by Botic van de Zandschulp, giving the Dutchman the chance to serve for the first set at 6-5. And he's smashed his racket.

He then threw it in the bin, and chucked a water bottle to the ground in frustration, sending water spilling across the court.

Fils was given a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct as court attendants quickly mopped up the water with towels.

And he went on to lose the first set 7-5.

Zizou Bergs just spent eight minutes off court for a bathroom break.

Players are limited to three minutes for a regular toilet break and five minutes for a change-of-attire break. The clock does not start until they've reached the bathroom.

Bergs told the umpire that he would be taking a full five minutes to change his kit. But he spent almost double that amount of time off court.

And Jamie Murray has now hit out at the lengthy delay, claiming the walk from Shanghai's main Stadium court to the bathroom wasn't that long.

Over 8mins for a toilet break. Still not started back. Prob takes 20 secs to walk from centre court to the changing rooms in Shanghai. How is that acceptable/allowed?

After almost three hours of competition, qualifier Caty McNally is into the second round of the Wuhan Open.

The American quickly lost the first set to Yuliia Starodubtseva, but came through a rollercoaster second set, which saw four breaks of serve, to take it in a tiebreak.

McNally went a double-break down in the final set, but she reeled off five straight games to claim a sensational 2-6 7-6(2) 6-4 comeback victory in two hours and 56 minutes.

Zizou Bergs has taken a toilet break after winning the first set, and he's left Carlos Alcaraz waiting on the court.

Players get three minutes for a normal toilet break, or five minutes for a change-of-attire break. But that clock starts when they enter the bathroom.

Bergs has now been off the court for more than seven minutes, and the Spaniard is pacing around the baseline waiting and trying to stay warm.

It's taken eight minutes for the Belgian to come back to the Stadium court, and commentator Pete Odgers said: "Zizou Bergs close to going over the line here, he was given a minute to come back."

Carlos Alcaraz has lost the first set 7-5 to Zizou Bergs, and he's not happy.

The Spaniard had been venting his frustrations towards his team after getting broken to trail 6-5.

Alcaraz managed to save the first three set points, but one of his dropshots just failed to clear the net, and Bergs has finally taken the set.

The second seed had told his team that he was struggling to adjust to the conditions. He his 17 unforced errors in that set, and knows he must do better to stay alive in Shanghai.

This third-round clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Zizou Bergs is getting tense.

The No. 2 seed hasn't looked comfortable today. After coming back from a break down in the middle of the first set, he has been broken again, and Bergs will serve for the opener at 6-5.

Alcaraz has been ranting at his bix in Spanish throughout the last changeover after getting broken, and looks animated. And he's continued venting while heading to the baseline to play on.

"He's frustrated. He's saying he can't adjust to the ball, the speed, everything that's going on. He says one ball goes like this, another goes like that. He is frustrated. Samuel Lopez [coach] having a little bit of difficulty having to manage this right now," Greg Rusedski said.

Daniil Medvedev is through to the last 16 after beating Dalibor Svrcina 6-2 6-3.

He was made to work for it at the end, getting broken when serving for the match. But the No. 5 seed immediately broke again to clinch the win.

Up next? Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Daniil Medvedev has raced into a 6-2 lead over Dalibor Svrcina on the Grandstand court.

Stefanos Tsitsipas awaits in the last 16.

8 hours ago10:54 Yasmin Syed

Dalibor Svrcina is facing fifth seed Daniil Medvedev on the Grandstand court, and he believes the LED screens are too bright.

There was an issue on this court just a couple of days ago, when Stefanos Tsitsipas' match against Luciano Darderi started 13 minutes late because the LEDs were too bright, and there was a huge delay in getting them dimmed.

Svrcina's request seems to have been granted, and the lights have been turned down. However, the backspash is green, and the Czech ace is now arguing that he can't see the ball against the green backdrop in the middle of a rally.

Medvedev leads 4-1 with a double break in the first set.

Rafael Jodar took another step towards the ATP Finals as he beat Jiri Lehecka in Shanghai today.

This is the 20-year-old's first season on tour, but he's in with a shot of qualifying for the year-end championships.

The top eight players in the race make it to Turin, but with Jannik Sinner ending his 2026 season early, it means the ninth-place player will take his spot this year.

Jodar is currently 11th in the race, but can overtake some of his rivals with a deep run. But the Spaniard admitted that he wasn't actively thinking about the ATP Finals.

"Nothing at all. I’m just gonna focus on my next match, that it will be very tough, and go match by match," he explained.

"I still have a few tournaments, so I will try to give my best and if I make it, I’ll be very happy. If not, I’ll still [be] very happy with the season to be the first one, and I’ll try for the next one."

Stefanos Tsitsipas came from a set down to upset Taylor Fritz at the Shanghai Masters, and then celebrated by writing a complicated equation on the camera lens.

‘x² + y√z x 28 = ?’ he inked after claiming a 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory.

Asked about that message, the Greek star admitted that it was somewhat symbolic of the match.

“I would like people to give me their answers. Not a huge fan of math myself but it was an assessment of today’s match,” he said.

“X, Y, Z being thrown around, overcomplicated things, but at the end it felt like 1, 2, 3 was much easier than any of those theories I might have had in the beginning.

“I found a good answer and I’m extremely happy with myself that I kept things neat and simple towards the end.”

For the second match in a row, Rafael Jodar has come from a set down to advance at the Shanghai Masters.

Aged 20, Jodar is playing his first full season on the ATP Tour and is making his debut here as the 12th seed.

And he's battled back to beat 22nd seed Jiri Lehecka 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4.

Jodar has become the youngest man to reach the round-of-16 at five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments since Novak Djokovic in 2007. What an effort.

The Spaniard reached the quarters in Madrid and Rome, the semis in Montreal, the last 16 in Cincinnati, and is now into the last 16 here, too.

Anna Kalinskaya has become the latest player to pull out of the Wuhan Open, citing illness.

That's now five withdrawals since the draw was made just two days ago.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has caused a massive upset in Shanghai, beating 11th seed Taylor Fritz 3-6 7-5 6-3.

The Greek star got off to a tough start in Monday’s match, as he found himself fending off lots of break points and started ranting at his box.

Fritz, meanwhile, looked untouchable on serve for much of the match. That was until he served to stay in the second set at 5-6.

Since then, Tsitsipas has been on a tear, breaking twice.

The world No. 43 is through to the last 16 of a Masters 1000 event for just the second time this season.

This is Tsitsipas’ seventh top-20 win of 2026. He had none last year.

He could face Daniil Medvedev next. That would be a belter.

9 hours ago09:36 Yasmin Syed

Taylor Fritz is serving to stay in the match against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

And a ball has just fallen out of the American's pocket at 2-5 30-30 in the final set, a crucial moment.

The umpire has called a let but is now conducting a video review to see whether his own call impeded Fritz's last shot or not.

And the review has shown that Fritz missed the ball before the call came. That means that, instead of replaying the point as players usually would when a ball falls out of a pocket, the umpire has awarded the point to Tsitsipas, so it's match point. That's because Fritz technically lost the point before the 'let' call came.

And there's even more drama! Another ball has just fallen out of Fritz's pocket at match point down.

Under the rules, usually, the first time this happens, it's a replay of the point. The second time, the player loses the point.

But because the 'first time' didn't really count, as Tsitsipas was awarded the point and they did not replay the point, the incident at 30-40 actually counts as the first let. So they have replayed the point.

Tsitsipas questioned this with the umpire, but he's accepted it. And Fritz saved the match point when they replayed the rally at 30-40.

The 11th seed has since saved three more match points. Tsitsipas will now serve for the match at 5-3.

Magdalena Frech is making the most of her second chance at the Wuhan Open. After suffering defeat in the final round of qualifying, she got into the main draw as a lucky loser. And she’s just beaten Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-3 7-6(5).

Frech had three match points on the Thai qualifier’s serve at 5-3 in the second set, and another when she served for the match at 5-4. But she got broken, and ended up winning in a tiebreak.

No. 12 seed Rafael Jodar had to come from a set down to win his opening match in Shanghai, and he’s trying to pull off another comeback against Jiri Lehecka today.

The Spaniard dropped the opening set, and break points came and went for both men in the second before they went to a tiebreak. Jodar raced through, winning it 7-2 to force a third and final set.

It's been a tough few months for the Italian, who has been battling a foot injury and dropped down the rankings. But she's just beaten in-form Czech ace Sara Bejlek 6-3 6-4.

And lucky loser Magdalena Frech has run into some trouble. The Pole entered the draw as a lucky loser and served for the match against Mananchaya Sawangkaew, but got broken. They’re now in a second set tiebreak, and Frech will be hoping to get it done here.

We're going the distance on the main Stadium court in Shanghai.

Taylor Fritz has been so solid on serve today, but he let that slip when serving to stay in the second set for the second time, and Stefanos Tsitsipas pounced.

Britain's Sonay Kartal spent six months sidelined by a back injury this year, but she's already earned some big wins after returning at the recent BJK Cup Finals.

Using a protected ranking of No. 56, Kartal was able to enter the WTA 1000 events in Beijing and Wuhan. After getting to the third round in Beijing last week, she's off and running at the Wuhan Open.

Kartal trailed world No. 48 Anhelina Kalinina 2-5 in the opening set, but reeled off six straight games, going on to win 7-5 6-3.

She later said: “It was tough. I think I played her last year and I knew it was going to be a tough battle. Obviously let her kind of take a big lead in the first set, but it was a solid performance, did what I needed to do, and happy with just coming out on top in the end.”

In Shanghai, Taylor Fritz has just taken the first set 6-3 over Stefanos Tsitsipas. The American failed to convert his first eight break points in that set, but took the ninth and then served it out.

Tsitsipas has been ranting towards his team, so much so that Sky Sports commentators had to apologise for some X-rated language.

And 22nd seed Jiri Lehecka is on course to cause a bit of an upset, as he leads No. 12 seed Rafael Jodar 6-4.

"Wuhan is where my tennis dream began, and the Wuhan Open is also where I made my breakthrough at the WTA 1000 level. I have always looked forward to competing in front of my hometown fans.

"Since returning from injury, however, I have played a demanding stretch of tennis over the past month and a half, competing at the US Open, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the China Open. My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches.

When Carlos Alcaraz takes to the court to face Zizou Bergs today, expect to see the Spaniard sporting a moustache. The No. 2 seed had a new look for his opening match a couple of days ago, and his entire team also shaved in matching ‘taches. Eagle-eyed fans realised that Team Alcaraz had been shouting “moustaches for everyone” when he defended his title in Tokyo last week, and the seven-time Major winner later confirmed that the style was a Japan Open-related bet – and something they had to keep up while in Shanghai.

“Well, yeah, it’s gonna be… Yeah, it’s gonna stay for the week,” he smiled.

“It was just about a bet. I wanted to play with a moustache, trying how I look with it. And, yeah, the tournament of Tokyo, we said, ‘Okay, if I win the tournament, we all have to do the moustache for Shanghai’. So let's see until when we're going to wear it, but right now we're just having fun and laughing around.”
