“This is Where Her Players Get it From”: WNBA Fans React as Natalie Nakase Holds and Grabs Caitlin Clark in Practice Drill

As an assistant coach on Team USA, Natalie Nakase has to devote her attention to the team’s bid for a fifth straight gold medal at the FIBA World Cup. That means working with elite players who would otherwise be looking to take down her Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA.
Funnily enough, a clip of Nakase playing defense against Caitlin Clark has gone viral. In a clip posted on Wednesday, the Valkyries coach can be seen tugging at Clark’s jersey during a Team USA practice session.
This clip led to some hilarious reactions from fans.
“So this is where her players get it from,” one fan tweeted.
Though fans have made jokes about the Valkyries’ physicality, the numbers show that Nakase’s team is getting the job done. The Valkyries have the best defensive rating in the WNBA, leading the league in categories like opponents’ points in the paint and opponents’ points off turnovers.
The Valkyries’ defensive identity is the driving force that has propelled them to the No. 2 spot in the standings. There are four games left on Golden State’s regular season schedule after the FIBA break, but for now, Nakase is focused on winning the World Cup.
Prior to the start of the World Cup, the WNBA gave Natalie Nakase an award that she’d won just once before.
For leading the Valkyries to a 10-2 record in August, Nakase was named Coach of the Month.
The Valkyries’ record in August includes wins over other playoff-bound teams like the Minnesota Lynx, the New York Liberty, and the Dallas Wings.
