Town and Premier League Launch Racist Abuse InvestigationSunday, 20th Sep 2026 15:59

Town and the Premier League are investigating racist abuse aimed Blues winger Abdul Fatawu on social media following yesterday’s game at Everton.

The Ghana international was red-carded in the 67th minute of the 1-0 defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Fatawu, 22, was subsequently the target of racist abuse online with the club and Premier League both issuing statements.

Town’s reads: “Ipswich Town Football Club is aware of online racist abuse directed at Abdul Fatawu via social media.

“The club finds any form of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable and has no place in football.

“We are investigating this incident alongside the Premier League and the relevant authorities. We will continue to offer Abdul our full support.”

The Premier League posted: “The Premier League stands with Abdul Fatawu and Ipswich Town following the unacceptable abuse he has received online, and we have offered our full support to the player and club.

“We are appalled by the discrimination players face online and it has no place in football or wider society.

“We will continue working with clubs, authorities, law enforcement and social media companies to address this issue, support investigations and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“Those found guilty of discriminatory abuse should expect the strongest possible sanctions, including club bans and legal prosecution.”

Disgusting, shameful and embarrassing.

"“We are appalled by the discrimination players face online and it has no place in football or wider society."

From the club who gave Farage a platform.

Unfortunately Ipswich is no different to other clubs and society in general, where social media gives mindless idiots a platform to insult others from behind a keyboard.

These same people wouldn’t be brave enough to say such a thing face to face to another person.

Stay strong Abdul and remember that 99.9% of Ipswich town fans abhor this behaviour.

Wheres Burns, I think everyone both inside and outside of the club recognise the whole Farage incident was a mistake but by continuing to reference it doesn’t help and only gives oxygen to those on that side of the political spectrum.

Embarrassing, we were all frustrated with the manner of his red card but I don’t understand how anybody could then choose to bring race into it. People like that are a stain on society.

Knew there would be an idiot who would mention this.

As the club says, it’s completely unacceptable. I agree 100%.

Bizarre you don't see a correlation and also that you find it so offensive. I wonder why? Really, really odd behaviour. yours faithfully 'idiot & moron' x

Where’s Burns, please stop digging yourself a hole and reflect on how the view you have expressed really doesn’t sit well with the vast majority on here. You may not care what other people think but……..

Find them, publicly name and shame them and ban them for life. No place in our club for disgraceful morons like these.

I understand Where's Burns comments and see them as valid. There is a serious argument to suggest that certain individuals within our club could be more than capable of posting similar social media filth if they weren't in such prominent and privileged positions.

At first glance, I assumed this meant that Everton supporters were responsible. That this behaviour came from our own "supporters" makes it even worse, if that is possible. Luckily, the vast majority condemn this moronic attitude. (Sorry, Everton!)

chepstowblue that is totally unfounded bollox, and a despicable accusation to aim at the Town management team.

Just because you lost to Bolton today …..off you toddle there’s a good boy .

What’s the point? His race has nothing to do with his sending off yesterday.

His lightning quick pace might however have something to do with his race, but as I see it, that’s all positive for us. Hope he can get some goals when he returns to repay his silly behaviour at Everton.

Why are we people condemning Where’s Burns? He’s right in that we platformed Farage who is the main reason we have right wing racists finding their voice in the uk. We might not like it but this statement will be picked up and have its hypocrisy called out.

make it make sense 'backwaywhen'

The irony of being abused online on an article about online abuse. The irony of the club referring to hate, division and discrimination after platforming a man who has made a career of amplifying hate, division and discrimination.

Other than cultish fans (of either ITFC or a certain political party) being upset at any perceived negativity towards their club/party I am struggling to see what is so upsetting about the original post?

Their is no lie being spoken. Honestly, it's baffling and a little bit funny.

This is ugly, and just shows how far people like this will stoop. They are no more than guttersnipes. However, the question is…. Which side of the fence have these racist remarks come from, jumping to conclusions is wrong, let’s find out what the investigation reveals.

Wheres burns. That'll be the Farage, ur claiming is racist, but was married to a german woman and is now with a French woman. The homophbic guy, whos assistant is gay. So maybe if you got ur facts right before posting, u wouldnt get so much stick for ur post. Maybe ud be better employed to be condemning the abuse against Fatawu than to use this story to show ur bias against some1,else.

Suffolkitfc His post was based on just view that Farage is,racist. He isnt. Or why would he have been married to a,German woman, or be with a French woman now? So there is no hypocrisy with this. Or maybe you think thd club should ignore this abuse.

Blues 1, yes nothing racist about making gas chamber hissing sounds at fellow Jewish students at his college, perfectly acceptable behaviour

Funny, I could swear this was an article about the racial abuse of Abdul Fatawu, but it appeared to turn into an article about Nigel Farage, so I actually had to go back to the top and double check and my initial thoughts were correct. It seems that any one with an agenda will look for even the tiniest chink of light to express it, whether warranted or needed or not.

As for the subject of the article, abuse of any kind should not be tolerated by any one, more particularly when it's spouted by useless morons who would run a mile if confronted face to face by the object of their hate.

Well, when the club chairman aligns the club with a political party known for its intolerance of diversity and community, and a large cohort of fans choose to look the other way, what do you expect?

Disgraceful from the 'supporters' involved.

Pirateplank, one possible chink in that argument, unless I've missed something, and I'm sure you can correct me if I have. Nowhere does it state who exactly the " abusers " are. They might even be a mixture of football supporters from anywhere and non football football supporters who take any chance they can get to spit their bile. I didn't chose to look the other way regarding the Farage " incident ", in the very first post I made on it I said I thought it was wrong and an error of judgement. Then I moved on, as I too am not perfect and subject to similar things on occasion. If you are perfect, than I congratulate you and perhaps you can teach me something.

@Armchaircritic59 - I did not make the argument you imply and therefore your assumption is erroneous. Anyway, well done for not ignoring the creeping bigotry and discrimination throughout the club
