White Sox outfielder Tristan Peters has been named American League Rookie of the Month for August, capping a month that turned a solid rookie year into a statement.
Peters hit .320 with a 1.054 OPS and six home runs in August. From Aug. 22-26, he homered in five straight games against the Mets and Rangers, tying the MLB rookie record and matching a White Sox mark last done by teammate Munetaka Murakami earlier this season. Chicago became the first club since at least 1900 with two rookies who each posted a five-game homer streak in the same year.
The 26-year-old from Winkler, Manitoba, entered 2026 as a low-profile addition. The White Sox acquired him from Tampa Bay in December for cash or a player to be named. He was 0-for-12 in a brief 2025 debut with the Rays. This season he has started in center field, made the All-Star team as a replacement, and hit for the cycle July 10 against the Athletics.
Through Wednesday, he was hitting .279 with a .345 on-base percentage, .813 OPS, 12 home runs, 52 RBIs, 54 runs, 27 doubles, four triples, and eight stolen bases in 134 games. Baseball-Reference has him at 3.8 WAR. Not bad for a guy that pretty much nobody knew of prior to the season.
July was the dip. He slashed a paltry .218 with a .643 OPS that month and led many to wonder if the magical first half was a mirage. After the break, he said he was lifting the ball better. August delivered. Over his last 30 games entering this week, he was at .306/.398/.612 with six homers.
Murakami won the same monthly award in May. Peters is now the second White Sox rookie honored in 2026. He still trails Tigers shortstop Kevin McGonigle in most Rookie of the Year polling, but the all-around package, contact, extra-base power, speed and outfield defense, has been a quiet engine for a first-place club.
Chicago is in a division race after three straight 100-loss seasons. Peters was not on preseason prospect lists. He is on the field almost every day now, and August made that official.
