Two bold Newcastle calls pay off as Jaissle assistant turns air blue on touchline - 5 things

Matthias Jaissle, manager of Newcastle United, celebrates beating Hull with his backroom team

Newcastle United bounced back from Monday evening's drubbing at Leeds United by beating Hull City 2-1 at St James' Park to secure a valuable three points.

A blistering start saw Harvey Barnes set up two goals inside the first seven minutes, providing the ammunition for Joe Willock and Lewis Hall to put the Magpies in a commanding position in the game. Yoane Wissa missed the chance to kill the game from the penalty spot after seeing his spot-kick well saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis and it was a moment that felt like could change the momentum of the game.

Matthias Jaissle brought on Fabian Schar for Sean Steur in the 65th minute and it seemed to cause confusion as to how his team were supposed to set up. Hull took advantage to get back in the game as Mohamed-Ali Cho fired beyond Lukas Hornicek to set up a nervy finish.

And to say it was anxious inside of St James' Park was an understatement. Hull threw the kitchen sink at Newcastle and although it looked ragged and panicky they just about rode out the storm to secure a crucial three points. Here are five things we learned from a frenetic afternoon on Tyneside.

Newcastle's injury situation forced Matthias Jaissle's hand somewhat but two of the eyebrow-raising calls when the team news dropped was Lewis Miley starting at right-back and Willock lining up in a two-man midfield with Sean Steur. Tino Livramento and Amar Dedic's injuries forced Miley back into the right-back role he performed so admirably in last season and he slotted in seamlessly, making a number of vital interceptions and a huge block to deny a certain goal from Sorba Thomas.

Meanwhile Willock's inclusion posed the question of whether he could thrive in a two-man midfield having featured as a No 10 this season and predominantly in a midfield three under Eddie Howe.

Many thought Aladji Bamba would have been given his full debut and the question has to be asked if he can't start when Nico Gonzalez, Joelinton and Jacob Ramsey are out injured and Miley has been shipped to right-back, when will he? But Willock justified his inclusion inside two minutes, latching on to Barnes' pass before lashing home with his left-foot past Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from close range.

Another mature performance from teenager Sean Steur alongside him allowed Willock to be full of energy at both ends of the pitch, chasing down opposition attackers and often initiating the team's press. It felt like he had a point to prove after losing his place in the side at Leeds and this performance certainly sent a message to Jaissle.

But it also justified the German head coach's desire to keep him at the club amid fierce transfer interest from Besiktas and a new contract is surely in the offing before the turn of the year.

Newcastle needed a response to Monday's disappointment at Leeds and two players key in setting the tone in delivering that were the left-hand side combination of Barnes and Hall.

Barnes created both of Newcastle's opening goals, finding Willock and Hall with incisive passes. He slalomed past a couple of Hull defenders with consummate ease for the second goal, with Hall firing home his first Premier League goal since February with an arrowed left-footed effort across Tzolakis.

Hall is playing with the confidence of a player who has just been handed a bumper new contract and earned a recall to the England set-up, while Barnes looked determined to send a message to Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel for his exclusion.

While Hall has been a mainstay at left-back, Barnes has largely had to play second fiddle to Anthony Gordon on the left-wing across the last three years but he has firmly stepped out of his shadow in the opening seven matches of this season. Barnes has three goals and two assists to his name and has emerged as one of Jaissle's most dependable players. £43million summer signing Bazoumana Toure arrived with a big reputation but the 20-year-old has work to do to oust Barnes from the side.

Newcastle fans feel well versed with Matthias Jaissle's character and touchline antics by now but we are still getting to know his backroom staff. Assistant coach Alexander Hauser is the most visible presence on the touchline alongside Jaissle but there was one moment in the first half that saw another of his assistants Florens Koch incensed.

Mohamed Belloumi tried an acrobatic effort but instead of connecting with the ball, he connected with the face of Willock and got a yellow card for his troubles. Koch was seen remonstrating with the fourth official, possibly asking why the incident didn't warrant more of a punishment.

It feels like we will begin to get a bit more of an insight into the character of Jaissle's assistants Koch, Hauser and Engin Yanova as the season progresses.

The injury crisis forced Newcastle to name five of the club's under-21 players on the bench this afternoon. Mason Miley was named on the bench for the second successive match, with teenage wingers Michael Mills and Kyran Thompson - who joined the club from Arsenal in the summer - defender Miodrag Pivas and forward Vakhtang Salia being named in the squad for the first time.

Jaissle has said he will give young players opportunities and wants to create a 'bridge' to the first team from the academy. A lot of today's inclusions were out of necessity but it was reward for their positive progress.

Salia has made a goal-laden start to the season with the under-21s, Miley and Pivas had opportunities across the summer and have never left the head coach's thoughts, while Mills has consistently impressed at under-18 and under-21 level. Thompson may be a new arrival but a goal and an assist on his under-21s debut against York City on Tuesday evening.

Amid it all, Newcastle secured a vital win and it felt like a much-needed one in the context of Monday's defeat at Leeds. It lifted Newcastle up to eight points after five games which feels like a reasonable return from a difficult run of fixtures.

It has temporarily lifted United into the top eight heading into the international break and it will just about quell any negativity from creeping into the camp ahead of a three-week break before their visit to Coventry City next month.
