UFC 331 star and ex-title challenger cautioned that split from long-time coach has ‘99%’ failure rate

Marlon Vera recently announced the decision to part ways with Jason Parillo ahead of his return.

Vera suffered his fourth consecutive loss earlier this year after being on the wrong side of the judges’ scorecards yet again.

His coach made it clear that he needed to up his output and aggression in between rounds, but things haven’t been clicking for ‘Chito’ inside the Octagon.

This has led to the former bantamweight title challenger making a big call ahead of Vera’s clash with Charles Jourdain later this month in Los Angeles.

Comment your pick and reasoning below for the biggest fall from grace.

Marlon Vera has produced some devastating knockouts inside the Octagon but hasn’t been able to recapture the form that previously earned him a title shot.

In an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show earlier this week, ‘Chito’ announced that he’s parted ways with long-time coach Jason Parillo ahead of his next fight.

The same coach that recently cornered Mackenzie Dern in her successful title defense has been a huge asset to Vera since they started working together in 2018.

Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub can understand why the 33-year-old has made this decision, having followed a similar path in his own career.

However, he raised the concern that while fighters will be optimistic about this being the change they need in order to turn things around, this is rarely the case.

“You’re just looking for a change and you’re hoping that that’s the fix,” he said on the Big Brown Breakdown. “99% of the time it’s not the fix that you’re looking for and you realize that the ride’s over. For ‘Chito’, I get it.

“This is like your last hurrah and you’re looking to change it up and you’re switching camps and you’re hoping that’s the fix. It’s usually not. It’s just father time. It’s the division. It’s the state of the sport and it’s just you’re not that dude anymore.”

Vera also revealed that he’s been training alongside fellow bantamweight Raul Rosas Jr. for UFC 331 in Los Angeles.

Some of the points that Brendan Schaub touched on were mentioned by Marlon Vera when he broke the news.

Schaub said that this move wouldn’t be due to him not loving his coach and that it would be a hard call to make, which ‘Chito’ expressed.

“I didn’t want to let my career get to the very end and then question myself: ‘What would have happened if I made a change?’… Making changes is hard,” Vera said. “You don’t want to tell people you love or who have a big spot in your heart, ‘Hey, I’m going to move forward for now and see what I can do.’ It was a hard decision, but all I can do is try.”
