For all the success Dana White has achieved in his personal life and professional life, his upbringing was far removed from the world of billion-dollar sports businesses and UFC superstardom.
White and his sister Kelly were raised largely by their mother, June, after their parents divorced, with his dad fighting his addiction to alcohol. June worked as a nurse while also going to school, and recently while on Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast, the UFC head honcho spoke about the sacrifices she made to raise two children, largely on her own.
However, he's also spoken about their subsequent falling out after the decision she made, which ended their relationship before she passed away.
The family eventually moved from Boston to Las Vegas, with White remembering the journey across the country as one of the defining memories of his childhood.
Despite the difficulties at home, White has never denied that his mother worked incredibly hard. In fact, years later, he and his sister would still acknowledge what she had done for them. But the relationship between mother and son eventually deteriorated badly. So much so that by the time she passed away, they were no longer on speaking terms.
White has said the breakdown began after a dispute involving money and the fact his mother became increasingly bitter regarding his success. By the end of it, he and his sister were no longer speaking to their mother. But it wasn't because of the bitterness and the dispute over money that ended the relationship.
It was something that his mother did that he later described as 'the grossest, most disgusting thing that you couldn't even imagine possible.'
While White was away on business in London, England, he discovered that his mother had done something he says he could never have imagined happening to him. She had written an unauthorised book about him.
June White did not hold back. The book contained accusations about her son's character, business practices, and personal life, while also including private photographs, including shots of his own wedding.
Speaking years later on the Bartlett podcast, which was released on the 5th of October, he described what his mother had done as one of the most upsetting and disturbing things he had experienced. He also claimed that the book contained things that were not true and said its impact extended beyond him, hurting other people mentioned in it.
Later on in the same podcast recording, he was then asked about his feelings towards her after her passing, and he insisted that he did not want to spend his time publicly attacking her. Instead, he returned to the part of her story that even years of estrangement could not erase.
She had raised two children by herself. White has said that he and his sister would sometimes look back and wonder how their mother managed everything she did, so whatever happened between them later in life, he still respected the determination it took for her to raise them.
Their relationship may have ended in silence, but White's memories of his childhood remain a mixture of gratitude, hurt, and unresolved family history.
