In conjunction with the Vancouver Goldeneyes unveiling their new look this past week ahead of their second season in the PWHL, I’ve been assigned the task of ranking the uniforms of B.C.’s top sports teams.
I realized right off the top this could get messy.
“This is why I love these things. I don’t agree with anything you’re saying,” sports editor Paul Chapman replied via text message to the first draft of the list.
That’s the morale of the story. Opinions will differ. Some will differ dramatically. This is meant merely as a fun conversation piece. Feel free to come up with your own list. Feel free to send it along to Chapman. Feel free to not share his response about it with me. Please.
So here’s the list. We’re not counting third jerseys or specialty night jerseys, since every team involved doesn’t feature them. If they were in the mix, this list would be decidedly different, with Vancouver Canucks’ black skate or their stick-in-the-rink original in the mix at the top.
Essential reading for hockey fans who eat, sleep, Canucks, repeat.

The black jerseys with black pants home uniforms and the white jerseys with white pants away gear are both crisp and clean, and especially when you see the 45 players first take the field on game day. I’m not the biggest fan of orange as a colour, but it works as an accent with both sets and in the Lions’ logo on the helmet.
There’s something classic and timeless about the best of the baseball uniforms. You can make a case for that with the Canadians. I love the script-style “Canadians,” across the chest on the white home jerseys and the “Vancouver,” on the road greys. The C’s logo on the hats, which features a baseball and a maple leaf, is a winner, too.
Blue and cream is a colour combination you don’t readily see in sports uniforms but it meshes well here. The giant eye logo, which takes over the front of the jersey this year, is fun. So is the new V-shape blocking on the sides of uniforms, especially since it can play as an ode the team’s flying-V victory celebration. This new striping on the lower sleeves is slowly growing on me.
The Rise’s Sunshine kit is also a unique colour combo for sports uniforms. I’m stealing the description from elsewhere — a golden-yellow starburst pattern on teal-green canvas. This year’s addition of the After Dark kits, with its blues and purples, is eye-catching as well.
Count me as a part of Team Johnny Canuck. The logo has a playful charm. It fits with the region. I’m in on the green as a primary colour, too. It’s not over the top, like it is with say the Seattle Seahawks’ alternate uniforms or the Dallas Stars’ alternates.
To borrow a line from a colleague, both the Whitecaps and Vancouver Canucks’ uniforms suffer from feeling a little too corporate. That’s going to be hard to duck in soccer, considering there’s a sponsor’s name across the chest. I do like the detailing around the collar and the sleeves on Whitecaps’ Coastal kit this year, which is billed as paying homage to the North Shore mountains.
As a singular uniform set on its own, I’m a fan of the Warriors’ gear, and especially the black with gold home jerseys. But when the Canucks bought the Vancouver Stealth, moved them downtown from Langley and pledged a rebrand, I was hoping they’d sync up the new look with their other properties. What better way to sell the lacrosse team to the masses than to borrow some of the marketing juice the hockey club has? Hit people hard with that connection. Blue and green with a Johnny Canuck holding a lacrosse stick? How about a black skate version of the lacrosse jersey? There are options there. As it sits now, it’s hard to not think of the Vegas Golden Knights when you look at the Warriors’ uniforms, and that’s not a plus.
I like the dark blue, and the mask-wearing fox in the logo is a plus for me. I don’t like the overall layout, with piping separating the team name and the logo, and the all-caps font doesn’t work for me, either.
The whale logo is played out for me. As well, the black skate has won me over. I don’t remember being especially enamoured with the skate when it debuted in 1985-86. I did talk to somebody this week who swears the look was ahead of its time. Maybe that’s the case? I’m still good with the Canucks traditional blue and green colours, and I think the stick-in-the-rink logo still has its place.
