Title favourites Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka headline on the first day of fourth-round action at the US Open at Flushing Meadows on Sunday.

But while both players will probably prevail, they face potentially tough tests of their trophy credentials in New York City.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has done well to get his game back to a level at which he can compete at a Grand Slam but the Greek's interest in the US Open singles looks likely to end when he meets Ben Shelton, who remains among the most promising of the high-level performers in American men's tennis.

Shelton and Tsitsipas have been feeling their way in the first week of the year's concluding major tournament, and both players have won each of their first three singles outings in four sets.

Shelton's biggest fear may be fatigue after a fine campaign which has yielded four ATP singles titles, the latest of which came in the Montreal Masters.

But while Tsitsipas has reached two Slam finals in his longer career - Shelton has yet to make a major singles final - youth can prevail and the 23-year-old Atlanta native can land a first win over Tsitsipas.

The Athenian, 28, edged past Shelton 7-6 7-6 in the 2023 Cincinnati Masters but franking that form is likely to prove difficult three years on.

Alex Michelsen has been performing at his very best at the US Open and his victories over consistent compatriot Brandon Nakashima and the promising Daniel Merida suggest he has truly arrived on the major scene.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Michelsen's opponent in the last 16, made light work of his fellow Argentinian Mariano Navone, first-round conqueror of Novak Djokovic, in round three.

Etcheverry, 27, will hope his greater experience counts for plenty but the innate power of Michelsen, who has long been well regarded, looks likely to help him nail a place in the quarter-finals.

Emma Navarro has been wandering in the tennis wilderness in recent times but the American can once again be part of the title chatter if she sees off last-16 opponent Anna Kalinskaya in decent fashion.

Possible dates with Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff lie around the corner for Navarro, but for now she will be taking it one match at a time.

In round three, New York City native Navarro dismissed Karolina Muchova, who has been in fine form this year and had previously dropped only one game in sweeping aside Britain's Katie Boulter, so the form may be decent.

For her part, 21st seed Kalinskaya did well to oust Elina Svitolina in three sets in her last singles outing but the Ukrainian ninth seed is not exactly a progressive performer aged 31.

Sorana Cirstea is enjoying a fine Indian summer in her career but the 36-year-old Romanian may struggle to live with Jessica Pegula in their fourth-round clash.

Buffalo native Pegula, runner-up in the US Open two years ago, still harbours hopes of joining the ranks of Grand Slam singles champions and it looks as if her best chance of doing that may come in her home state of New York.

Pegula has won the last three of four encounters between the two and six of the last seven sets the pair have contested, so should take a good deal of stopping.
