It would be easy to simply go with ranking and seeding and side with Flavio Cobolli in his last-32 clash against Alexander Blockx given what the Italian has achieved this year, but the likelihood is that the French Open finalist and US Open fifth seed will find getting past improving Alexander Blockx a tough test again.
Cobolli is definitely the classier performer but the betting on this one is close and big-serving Belgian Blockx may again stand up to an opponent he has twice fared well against.
The pair have met twice this year and Blockx made light work of Cobolli on clay in Monte Carlo before going down in three close sets in a Cincinnati Masters hard-court clash last month.
Blockx has won three of the five sets the pair have contested so it seems reasonable to expect another competitive encounter and it may pay to expect at least 39 games.
Botic van de Zandschulp has threatened to shine at a high level on hard courts at times down the years and the Dutchman caught the eye when he swept aside Alex de Minaur in straight sets in round two.
He could follow up that excellent victory over the sixth-seeded Australian, but Zizou Bergs is an underrated performer who is perfectly capable of making a nuisance of himself against a player of Van de Zandschulp's status.
So rather than go all in on the favourite, it may be worth expecting Bergs to stand tall and put in the sort of positive performance that we are accustomed to on the ATP Tour.
Going over 37.5 games looks the best option in an encounter that may be closely fought.
Mirra Andreeva has taken her eye off the ball since winning her first Grand Slam singles title at the French Open in June, but judging by the first week's results in the Big Apple the teenager's focus may be returning.
She may need that because Nikola Bartunkova, her 20-year-old Czech opponent, is highly rated.
But while the outsider's best days undoubtedly lie ahead of her, Andreeva's carriage and game on court will have stepped up a notch after her Roland Garros heroics and there are few who can live with the 19-year-old when she is performing close to her peak.
Andreeva has dropped only six games in the first two rounds so she can be backed to post a third successive straight-sets victory.
In their only previous encounter, Yuliia Starodubtseva upended Elena Rybakina in three sets in the French Open in late May.
And while conditions are likely to be more to the US Open second seed's liking in NYC, it's just possible that the exciting Ukrainian outsider could again keep tabs on the reigning Australian Open champion.
Rybakina can be superb on her day and has dropped only 11 games in the opening two rounds. But a start of 6.5 games looks generous.
