In two weeks, just two teams will be left standing in the fight to become Super League champions.

Warrington Wolves and Hull KR are no strangers to contesting the showpiece of the rugby league season but only one can continue on the road to Old Trafford when they meet in the second playoff eliminator on Saturday evening.

Rival fans take great delight in reminding Warrington supporters about their side's ongoing 71-year wait to be crowned rugby league's champions.

Super League and summer rugby were nowhere near the RFL's thoughts the last time the Wire were top dogs but they have an outside chance of making it to this season's Grand Final.

After a blistering start was followed by an indifferent middle of the campaign, Warrington ended the regular season with eight wins from their final ten matches and their route through the playoffs is favourable.

Saturday's Eliminator with reigning champions Hull KR appears easier now than it would have done at the start of the campaign – the Robins were 9-4 for back-to-back titles at the start of the season but entered the post-season as 40-1 shots – and a semi-final against a Leeds side who showed a sign of vulnerability during the last two rounds of the regular season is also winnable if they are at the top of their game.

First they must defeat the Robins and the best home record in Super League should give Warrington confidence they can clear the first obstacle standing between them and Old Trafford.

Warrington won 12 of their 13 games at the Halliwell Jones during the weekly rounds – Leeds were the only side to beat them on their own patch – and they have twice beaten Hull KR this term.

A 34-12 win at the Halliwell Jones was followed by a 34-28 success in East Hull last month and Sam Burgess's men look decent business to cover a six-point handicap given Rovers' recent struggles.

The Robins enter the post-season having won only one of their last five, and while coach Willie Peters rested virtually all of his first team in last week's 36-12 defeat at St Helens, a much stronger Rovers side ended August with a 32-12 defeat at home to Toulouse and a 46-0 hiding at Wigan.

Indeed, the champions won only three of their ten league meetings with the other sides who made the top six – two against Leigh and one over Wigan, who fielded a youth team a week before the pair's meeting in the Challenge Cup final. The Warriors then thumped Rovers 40-10 at Wembley.

Rovers reached the Grand Final two years ago and then won the title last term so their playoff pedigree is not in question. However, the champions have looked nothing like the all-conquering unit who won the treble last year and then beat NRL premiers Brisbane Broncos in February's World Club Challenge.

Rovers have already seen two of their domestic titles cross the Pennines to Wigan and their grip on the Super League trophy may also end at the Halliwell Jones.
