Wayne Rooney shares what should happen with VAR after Nottingham Forest call

Nottingham Forest have clearly done something to upset ProRef after another shocking decision in the 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Reds took an early lead through Dan Ndoye. Then, the team enjoyed a pretty rampant 40-minute spell but failed to extend their lead – and we all know what normally happens in that instance.

Palace equalised through Daichi Kamada and took the first-half lead after Jefferson Lerma bagged a controversial goal before the interval. Yeremy Pino put the icing on the cake of success in the second half, with Forest left to rue missed chances.

It was the second goal that caused the most controversy. Lerma’s header was clearly diverted into the net via the elbow of Anan Khalaili, yet VAR deemed it a goal much to the bemusement of Wayne Rooney.

Forest have once again been on the wrong end of a decision. Darren Cann felt the goal should have stood because it would have taken too long to identify the handball, even though it took the officials six minutes to rule out a Forest goal against Tottenham in August.

Rooney is at the end of his tether when it comes to VAR. He thinks the sooner it’s put to bed as a bad experiment, the better, and Forest are once again right to bemoan the inconsistencies that come with the technology.

He said on Match of the Day: “The laws of the game are it should be disallowed because it obviously comes off Khalili’s arm – but it was difficult to spot.

“We looked at this about 20 times after them, and we couldn’t spot it, so for VAR it would have been difficult to spot.

“It’s only when they zoom in, you obviously need more time to see it, but, yeah, it should have been ruled out, but it wasn’t.

“I think we need to call it a day with VAR, but no, listen, it was very difficult.

“We were looking at it, and we looked so many times, and we couldn’t see it. I think the goal was given to Khalili on other outlets, and they probably took the time to look at it. It’s a difficult one, but the goal shouldn’t have stood.”

Forest will now feel they’re owed three decisions from the match officials. Goals have been chalked off against Tottenham and Coventry, with this Palace incident the latest in a long line of errors involving the Reds.

It’s getting beyond a joke now. Fans are paying good money, and officials are paid even better money to get these decisions right, yet they’re simply getting things badly wrong on a weekly basis.

Forest themselves do have to keep their own house in order. Missing so many chances is far from ideal, and it’s a shame that the Reds have to wait until next Sunday to try and put things right at the City Ground against Arsenal.
