What Does Jon Sumrall’s Florida Football Debut Mean? Look Across the SEC

Jon Sumrall will run out of the tunnel at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the first time as coach of the Gators on Saturday night.

Florida Atlantic, a 27-point underdog, will be waiting on the other side.

The Gators open the 2026 season against the Owls, beginning a new era under Sumrall and giving Florida its first chance to show what has changed under its new coaching staff. But recent SEC history suggests one game might not reveal much about Florida’s first season with Sumrall.

Several coaches who began their SEC tenures with victories have experienced growing pains shortly after their debuts. Some went on to have successful seasons. Others needed a bit more time. In some cases, the red flags came immediately after the opener.

One notable example was Kirby Smart. He began his time at Georgia in 2016 with a 33-24 win against No. 22 North Carolina. The Bulldogs racked up 456 total yards, including 289 rushing yards, and overcame a one-score deficit late in the third quarter.

A week later, Georgia nearly lost to Nicholls State. The Bulldogs entered their home opener No. 9 in the Associated Press Poll but managed to escape the FCS opponent 26-24. Georgia needed a defensive touchdown in the third quarter and watched a comfortable looking debut turn into a rocky Week 2 performance one week later.

Smart’s first season at Georgia ended with an 8-5 record.

Josh Heupel experienced a similar turn in his debut season at Tennessee in 2021.

The Volunteers cruised past Bowling Green with a 38-6 victory in Week 1. But days later, Tennessee allowed five sacks and fumbled the ball twice en route to a 41-34 loss to Pitt. Heupel still guided Tennessee to a 7-6 record that fall before it made a jump the following year, pushing into the College Football Playoff conversation and finishing 11-2.

Shane Beamer’s first two games with South Carolina in 2021 followed a similar pattern. The Gamecocks dominated Eastern Illinois 46-0 in Beamer’s debut before heading to East Carolina the following week. South Carolina managed to pull off a narrow 20-17 win.

Also of note: their careers demonstrate why early struggles don’t always define a new coach.

But for Sumrall, the situation is different in one important way. Unlike when Smart and Beamer accepted their first SEC gigs, Sumrall already has extensive head-coaching experience. He went 43-12 over four seasons at Troy and Tulane and won two conference championships before Florida hired him.

What he hasn’t experienced is coaching through an SEC schedule. That challenge begins after Florida’s two-game opening stretch against FAU and Campbell. Saturday will provide the first look at what this Florida team can be under Sumrall’s command. Even then, history suggests it shouldn’t be treated as the indicator for the rest of the season.
