What happened today (October 16) in history? Key events to look back on

From the 1905 Partition of Bengal to Kapil Dev’s Test debut, explore five significant events associated with October 16 in history.

October 16 holds a significant place in Indian history, marking the implementation of the Partition of Bengal in 1905, a decision that fuelled the Swadeshi movement.

The date also recalls the execution of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, a Palayakkarar ruler who resisted British East India Company rule, and Indian cricketer Kapil Dev’s Test debut. Globally, October 16 is observed as World Food Day and World Anaesthesia Day.

On October 16, 1905, the British government’s partition of Bengal came into effect under Viceroy Lord Curzon. The decision divided the Bengal Presidency into two administrative units and triggered widespread opposition. The protests helped strengthen the Swadeshi movement, which encouraged Indians to boycott British goods and promote indigenous products. The partition was annulled in 1911.

October 16, 1799, is commonly recorded as the execution date of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, a Palayakkarar ruler from Tamil Nadu who resisted the East India Company’s authority. He was captured after opposing British control and was hanged at Kayathar. Kattabomman remains an important figure in Tamil Nadu’s history of resistance to colonial rule.

On October 16, 1978, Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev made his Test debut against Pakistan in Faisalabad. He went on to become one of India’s most celebrated cricketers and captained the team to its first Cricket World Cup title in 1983. His achievements established him as a defining figure in Indian cricket.

World Food Day is observed every year on October 16 to raise awareness about hunger, malnutrition and food security. The date marks the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.

The observance encourages global efforts to improve access to safe, nutritious food and build sustainable food systems.

October 16 is also observed as World Anaesthesia Day, commemorating the public demonstration of ether anaesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1846.

American dentist William T. G. Morton administered ether before surgeon John Collins Warren operated on a patient. The demonstration helped establish anaesthesia as a major advancement in modern surgery, allowing procedures to be performed with significantly less pain.
