#3 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State: The matchup
The Irish enter the night as 28.5-point favorites playing their second straight home game after opening the season with convincing victories over Wisconsin (41-13) at Lambeau Field and Rice (52-0) by shutout last weekend. Notre Dame started its opener against the Badgers slowly, but pounced on the Owls from the jump with a fumble return touchdown just 14 seconds in and a 42-0 lead at the half. The Irish were able to rest starters in the second half of that game after C.J. Carr threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns in one half of duty.
Worth watching, though, was the fact that Notre Dame’s ground game, which averaged 3.5 yards against Wisconsin, logged 118 yards on 32 carries for a 3.7-yard average against Rice.
The Spartans face a steep upgrade in competition after opening the season with home wins over Toledo (30-20) and Eastern Michigan (35-7). Coach Pat Fitzgerald brings a tradition of overachieving and physicality during his time at Northwestern, which could serve Sparty well after a run of four straight seasons with a losing record. UConn transfer running back Cam Edwards has been a highlight through two games with 250 yards and three touchdowns, while Illinois defensive line transfer Eli Coenen has led the defense with three sacks.
