Patriots vs. Seahawks: The matchup
The Patriots enter Week 1 as 3-point road underdogs after an up-and-down offseason where the team traded for a bonafide No. 1 wideout in A.J. Brown while enduring weeks of troubling headlines surrounding coach Mike Vrabel’s off-the-field choices. New England was one of the NFL’s biggest surprises last season and exploded onto the scene with a breakout season from quarterback Drake Maye, posting a 14-3 regular-season record to win the AFC East Division for the first time since 2019 and reach the Super Bowl for the first time since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick in 2018.
The Seahawks were also far from a sure thing going into 2025 under the guidance of second-year coach Mike MacDonald and with a former NFL journeyman Sam Darnold taking over at quarterback. But Seattle emerged from a loaded NFC West Division by winning its final seven games of the regular season, leading the NFL in scoring defense and ranking No. 3 in scoring offense. Much of the same group remains intact, with running back Kenneth Walker and cornerback Tariq Woolen ranking among the Hawks’ biggest personnel losses. Seattle has just fourth-best betting odds (+1200) to repeat as Super Bowl champion and trails their NFC West rival LA Rams (+500) on that front.
