The United States looks to continue its pursuit of a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup title when it faces Italy in Group D play on Sunday in Berlin. Team USA opened the tournament with a commanding 94-61 victory over China, reinforcing its status as the favorite to win gold once again.

Led by head coach Kara Lawson, the Americans bring a roster loaded with WNBA talent, including Caitlin Clark, Breanna Stewart, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers. Clark made an immediate impact in her World Cup debut, helping spark the victory over China as the United States showcased the depth and versatility that have made it the dominant force in international women’s basketball.

Italy enters the matchup with confidence after defeating Czechia 63-54 in its tournament opener. The Italians have already taken a significant step toward advancing from Group D and will be looking to test themselves against the world’s top-ranked team.

While the United States is heavily favored, Italy’s disciplined style and strong defensive effort in its first game could provide an early challenge. The matchup also carries importance in the race for group positioning, with the top team advancing directly to the quarterfinals.
