English rugby has been rocked by the heartbreaking news that World Cup hero Lawrence Dallaglio is auctioning off his most treasured career memorabilia.

The former England captain has put his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal up for sale to settle mounting debts following personal bankruptcy.

Dallaglio was the driving force behind England’s greatest rugby triumph in Sydney, but his personal life has taken a devastating financial turn.

Here is the complete profile of the English sporting icon, his historic career achievements, and the debt crisis that forced his medal sale.

Dallaglio has placed his 2003 World Cup winner’s medal on the auction block at Budds auction house in Northamptonshire.

Auction experts estimate the historic medal will fetch between 50,000 and 80,000 pounds when bidding gets underway.

The sale also features his 2007 World Cup runners-up medal, his 2003 Six Nations medal, and his British and Irish Lions match caps.

Championship trophies from his European Cup and Premiership title runs with Wasps are also included, taking the collection’s estimated value to 180,000 pounds.

Dallaglio is parting with his life’s work to clear substantial debts owed to British tax authorities and corporate liquidators.

The 54-year-old former back-row forward was formally declared bankrupt in the High Court following an accumulation of unpaid business taxes.

His commercial firm, Lawrence Dallaglio Limited, collapsed with heavy liabilities owed directly to HM Revenue and Customs.

The financial pressure spiralled out of control following a costly and complex divorce from his former wife Alice.

Mounting legal fees and debt obligations initially forced Dallaglio to sell his luxury family property before turning to his sports memorabilia as a last resort.

Dallaglio opened up about his financial downfall during a raw and emotional appearance on The High Performance Podcast.

Reflecting on the crisis that led to his bankruptcy, the former England captain admitted:

“As a result of getting divorced, I was made bankrupt. I had some financial problems.”

Dallaglio explained how the sudden financial spiral caused him to retreat into complete isolation, contrary to his natural character:

“I probably was guilty of withdrawing back into my little shell and going into hibernation because, naturally, I am quite an extrovert, confident, bubbly individual.”

The 2003 World Cup winner also confessed to enduring a prolonged phase of self-pity while watching his fortune disappear:

“What I did not expect was so much of a period of such self-pity. I have been a little bit guilty of thinking, ‘Isn’t life really unkind? Haven’t things worked out against me?'”

Taking ownership of the business and personal choices that forced him to auction his medals, Dallaglio concluded:

“Much of it was my own doing. That is the first thing you have to acknowledge. I could have done things a lot better.”

Dallaglio stressed that parting with his most prized rugby honours is deeply painful, but facing his debts head-on is the only way to move forward.

Dallaglio is widely considered one of the most formidable and influential forwards in the history of international rugby union.

He earned 85 caps for England between 1995 and 2007, captaining his country and earning selection on three British and Irish Lions tours.

His crowning moment came in November 2003, playing every single minute of England’s World Cup campaign that ended with victory over Australia.

At club level, Dallaglio remained a fiercely loyal one-club man, leading London club Wasps to two European Heineken Cups and multiple Premiership titles.

His legendary standing in the sport was cemented in 2016 when he was formally inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
