Why Mariners are hiring Jason Kanzler as new manager to replace Dan Wilson

There are a few key reasons why the Mariners are hiring someone unknown to many.
Why Mariners are hiring Jason Kanzler as new manager to replace Dan Wilson

The Seattle Mariners fired Dan Wilson following the 2026 MLB season, and it wasn't a surprise after a massively disappointing year for the Seattle skipper.

In their search for a new manager, Seattle wound up hiring Jason Kanzler, someone not many might be familiar with. Instead of Joe Espada, Albert Pujols, or someone with ample MLB experience, the Mariners are going with Kanzler.

But why? ESPN's Alden Gonzalez revealed some insight into the Mariners' new manager that explains why Seattle is bringing in Kanzler to be their new manager starting in 2027.

"A former outfielder who was drafted in the 20th round in 2013, Kanzler previously spent five years in the Houston Astros organization, serving as a major league coach in 2022 and 2023," Gonzalez writes.

Kanzler was a part of the Houston Astros' 2022 World Series team, which is a good sign that he knows what a championship team looks like.

He spent the past three seasons with the Chicago Cubs as their director of player development. Considering how Pete Crow-Armstrong turned into a superstar, and plenty of other Cubs' prospects have looked good, he clearly was doing something right.

While the Mariners could've gone after someone more experienced, they landed on Kanzler. Gonzalez revealed why they wound up going with Kanzler for a job as a first-time manager.

"Former Astros manager Joe Espada was reportedly also a finalist for the position, but the Mariners valued Kanzler's combination of intelligence, intensity, and creativity and believe he will help players continue to develop in the major leagues, which they see as crucial to a roster featuring several up-and-coming young players," Gonzalez writes.

The Mariners have a ton of young talent on their roster, but in the Majors, they've struggled to settle in. If Kanzler is able to get these young players right, his hiring will have been worth it even if he's not perfect elsewhere.

Gonzalez shared a quote from the Mariners' president of baseball operations, Jerry Dipoto, that adds even more key insight to this decision.

"Our goal in this process was finding a manager with the ability to challenge all of us to improve," Dipoto said. "Jason has the mindset, expertise, communication skills, and intensity to help create a championship standard here in Seattle."

While there is obviously some risk with a first-time manager hire like Kanzler, the belief inside the Mariners' facility is all about how Kanzler can help the struggling superstars, and future stars, get things right in the big leagues.

The Mariners have a great roster, and they need a manager who can get the most out of it. His in-game management might not be perfect, but if he can help the development of this star-studded roster, then his hiring will have been more than worthwhile.
