Former New York Yankees star catcher Jorge Posada explained why he doesn't 'feel welcome' around the organization.
Yankees Legend Jorge Posada Explains Why He Doesn't 'Feel Welcome' By Team

Jorge Posada says he does not feel welcome around the Yankees, and analyst Adam Schein blames the current clubhouse leadership for ignoring championship pedigree.

Jorge Posada says he does not feel welcome around the New York Yankees, and his comments have triggered a sharp response from one prominent New York sports voice.

The former catcher made the revelation Tuesday on The Show, a New York Post program. Host Adam Schein reacted by calling the situation nauseating and pathetic. Posada, a Yankees legend from 1995 through 2011, was asked by Joel Sherman whether he would consider helping the organization in the future. I do not think they want me there, to tell you the truth, Posada said.

I do not feel welcome when I go there, you know? Even in spring training, I do not feel like they want me there, so I do not go. Posada did not tie the feeling to one specific incident. He did describe his final season in 2011 as a really tough one.

The Yankees moved him away from catcher to designated hitter and cut his playing time, and he finished with just a .714 OPS. So, it is just tough to go back and feel that again, he said. Posada spent his entire 17 year MLB career with the Yankees from 1995 to 2011. He was on the active roster for four World Series titles in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009.

He was a five time All Star and a five time Silver Slugger. In 2003 he finished third in American League MVP voting after hitting 30 home runs with 101 RBIs and 5.9 wins above replacement, posting a .281/.405/.518 slash line. Over his career Posada logged 1,664 hits and blasted 275 home runs with a .273/.374/.474 slash line. He started 1,450 regular season games behind the plate for New York.

Schein argued that current Yankees players should be learning from that kind of pedigree. Look at Jorge Posada's resume, Schein said. He does not feel welcome at spring training? You are telling me Austin Wells could not use talking to Jorge Posada?

Schein said the Posada situation adds to a broader clubhouse concern after Anthony Volpe failed to connect with Hall of Famer Derek Jeter. So, I think this officially is a clubhouse issue. I think this officially is a player issue, Schein said. I think that Aaron Judge needs to take control of his own clubhouse.

I want to know where Giancarlo Stanton is? Where is the veteran leadership? Schein gave manager Aaron Boone what he called a free pass on the issue. He also said he does not believe general manager Brian Cashman or owner Hal Steinbrenner would reject an esteemed former player like Posada.

Posada has indicated in the past that there was some bad beef with top executives about that final season, though he did not blame then manager Joe Girardi. If Derek Jeter cannot get Anthony Volpe on the phone, if Jorge Posada is not welcome, if you do not want to pick the brain of Tino Martinez, then we have got problems, Schein said. It is as simple as that.

He said the current group has yet to win a title and has just one World Series appearance in the Aaron Judge era dating to 2017. Posada won five titles during his time in the Bronx. If the Yankees of the current group, if they were winning, we are not having this conversation but they are losing and they are fundamentally unsound, Schein said. They play at their worst when it matters the most.

The antithesis of Posada and Jeter and those amazing Yankees teams. That right there, that is painful. That makes me sick. The fact that Jorge Posada, an all time great Yankee, blood, guts, sweat, tears, joy, jubilation, a guy who understands what winning is all about, he does not feel welcome at spring training, the Yankee clubhouse, Schein said.

Man, and you wonder why this team cannot perform in big spots. You wonder why they cannot perform in extra innings. What a joke, an embarrassment, that was nauseating. Absolutely pathetic.

The Yankees are coming off a 93-68 season in which they swept the Boston Red Sox in the MLB Wild Card Series. They were then swept by the eventual American League champion Tampa Bay Rays in the AL divisional series. In the regular season New York's offense was sixth in MLB in strikeouts with 1,480, and its collective defense tied for seventh in errors with 96.

The team announced in a press conference last week that Boone will return for a 10th season in 2027. Cashman, who has been general manager since 1998 and with the organization since 1986, received an extension. Posada's remarks and Schein's response have renewed questions about how much the current Yankees lean on the players who built the franchise's championship standard.
