Zheng Qinwen wins China Open, making history as first home women's champion

Zheng Qinwen beat French Open champion Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in the China Open women's singles final on Sunday, becoming the first Chinese player to win the title in the tournament's 22-year history.
Zheng, 24, entered the tournament as a wildcard and battled through six matches to reach the final, the first home player to do so. Against world No 5 Andreeva, she overcame a low first-serve percentage in the opening set with strong returning to take it 7-5. In the second set, the pair held serve until Zheng broke in the ninth game and closed out the match 6-4.
The title is Zheng's first WTA 1000 championship and her fifth career tour title, ending a two-year trophy drought. She had previously reached the Wuhan Open final in 2024 but lost to Aryna Sabalenka.
