Zverev vs Shelton: Experience Meets Electric Momentum in US Open Final

Alexander Zverev walks into the US Open final as the firm favourite, but Ben Shelton carries something far more powerful than rankings and head-to-head numbers.

The top-seeded German has already cemented 2026 as the finest season of his career. Having clinched his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open in June and followed it with a run to the Wimbledon final, Zverev has a golden opportunity in New York to add a second major trophy to his cabinet. Standing in his path, however, is a 23-year-old American who has spent the fortnight turning absolute confidence into undeniable conviction.

Zverev’s path to the final was far from straightforward. The world No. 2 survived gruelling five-set marathons against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys in the opening rounds, spending heavy time on court and looking vulnerable early on. Since then, however, the German has locked in, cruising through his last four matches without dropping a set and displaying clutch composure in back-to-back tie-breaks against Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals.

On the other side of the net, Shelton’s tournament has been defined by dramatic breakthroughs. The young American delivered one of the moments of the year by outlasting defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller that concluded at 3:33 AM. He followed that up with an emotionally charged, four-set victory over compatriot Frances Tiafoe, cementing his spot in his first Grand Slam final.

Beyond his maiden Grand Slam title, Shelton is playing for tennis history. A victory would make him the first American man to win a major singles title since Andy Roddick triumphed at Flushing Meadows in 2003, and the first Black American man to win a Grand Slam singles crown since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

While Zverev holds a 5-0 advantage in their career head-to-head meetings, none of those matches have been contested on a Grand Slam stage. Zverev brings veteran poise, a devastating first serve, and heavy baseline pressure, but Shelton brings unyielding momentum, a booming serve, and the roar of a home crowd behind him.

The favourite is clear, but the dream belongs to Shelton as Arthur Ashe Stadium prepares for a historic collision.
