"If you perform, no one on earth...,” Shikhar Dhawan clarifies no discrimination in Indian cricket based on region

Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan dismissed the suggestions that players face discrimination based on region in the national team selection. Dhawan admitted that while discrimination does not exist, luck does impact a player's career. However, he noted that missed opportunities affect players universally, whether they are from major cricketing hubs like Delhi and Mumbai or anywhere else. "No, there is certainly no discrimination," Dhawan told reporters at a press conference when asked whether there was discrimination of players from Jammu and Kashmir as they do not get many opportunities. "If you perform, no one on earth can keep you out; your performance must do the talking. Sometimes, luck also plays its part. That isn't exclusive to J&K. Whether it's a boy from Delhi or Mumbai, you will find plenty of instances where a player deserved an opportunity, but didn't get it, and someone else was picked instead. That is simply part and parcel of this game," he said. The press interaction was hosted alongside former India cricketer Aakash Chopra and regional star Parveez Rasool to announce Season 2 of the Pro Star Cricket League. "Today, when I was playing golf, I remarked to someone that 'your physique is just like that of a fast bowler'. The fast bowlers from here are remarkably strong and gifted. What is positive is that cricket exposure here is expanding. The more matches they play, the more their experience will grow," Dhawan stated. Referring to J&K's Ranji Trophy title win, the southpaw added: "It was for the first time in history. The widespread acclaim they received was truly commendable. Paras Dogra led them very well; all the boys from Kashmir and Jammu joined hands and played with great unity." Citing the examples of Rasool and Umran Malik, who have represented India also featured in the IPL, Dhawan said these players received a tremendous platform. He, however, insisted that the key is that the players must perform consistently at that level. Dhawan said the Pro Star Cricket League provides an ideal platform for youngsters to relish their dreams and also rub shoulders with international cricketers. Chopra, who is the League Commissioner, said while luck does play a part, the competition is quite stiff. "Luck does play a role, but the only thing within your control is to keep working hard and performing consistently. Indian cricket is currently at a juncture where if you have genuine talent, it will provide you with a stage. "If not while playing for the national side, the IPL will offer that platform. Then you play the Ranji Trophy, you play the Duleep Trophy. There is a lot of cricket that is happening," he said. Chopra pointed out that Indian cricket now boasts multi-layered pathways. Even if immediate national selection proves difficult, tournaments like the IPL, Ranji Trophy, and Duleep Trophy offer massive, merit-based platforms for genuine talent to succeed. He namedropped fast bowler Aqib Nabi who has played in the IPL and has been picked up for the national team as well, saying opportunities are coming his way. "The New Zealand tour is approaching. He is a fine lad and will do well," Chopra said of Nabi. (With PTI Inputs)

ENG v PAK 2026: “We are used to taking reactive decisions,” Misbah slams PCB for sweeping mid-tour overhaul of Test squad

Former skipper Misbah-ul-Haq slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its panic-driven, reactive approach after a sweeping mid-tour overhaul during the Test series in England. Notably, Misbah stepped down as national selector after the PCB released seven players and two caches from the squad for losing the first two Test matches at Headingley and Lord’s. While the turn of events prompted Misbah to resign, the PCB also issued a show-cause notice to every member of the selection committee, demanding explanations for certain picks. Speaking on a Pakistani TV show, Misbah highlighted double standards in how the board treats local versus foreign coaches, noting that the former face intense scrutiny while the latter hold more authority. "It is a fact that local and foreign coaches are treated differently in Pakistan cricket. Local coaches have to face more scrutiny and criticism when compared to foreign coaches," Misbah said. "I don't think there is anything wrong in having foreign coaches but what bothers me is we (fans, critics, media, PCB) tend to have a soft corner for foreign coaches," he added. Red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were relieved of their duties, with Mike Hesson-led white-ball coaching staff asked to take over the backroom responsibilities for the rest of the England tour. "We tend to give foreign coaches more authority and power and he is held less responsible if the team performs poorly. In contrast, local coaches always facing scrutiny from everyone." Misbah further stated that the PCB frequently panics under pressure rather than conducting calm, analytical reviews of team performance. "We shouldn't panic and do cosmetic surgery because of pressure. We need to analyse performances and the situation and then decide how to move forward," Misbah said. "Unfortunately, we are used to taking reactive decisions in Pakistan cricket." Misbah urged the PCB to take a leaf out of the BCCI’s book by focusing on structural patience rather than knee-jerk decisions. He highlighted several key factors behind India's dominance. "Our youngsters are playing too much white-ball cricket and their exposure to red-ball cricket is limited. Not enough four-day cricket. This means they have more chances of cracking under pressure. "India took time to process and develop and they made gradual investments in their system after the 90s. There is no quick fix to the system," he remarked.

About the news

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

How the news feed works

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
