Darryl Sutter defends Ryan Huska amid Calgary Flames' ugly start

Whether fair or not, there has been plenty of speculation lately about Ryan Huska’s future as head coach of the Calgary Flames. An ugly start to the season, highlighted by several lopsided losses, has resulted in plenty of fans questioning Huska, who is currently in his fourth season behind the Flames’ bench. The good news for Huska is that, despite all the outside noise, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Tuesday that the 51-year-old is not on the hot seat at this point in time. While that may frustrate some fans, it’s worth remembering just how difficult a situation Huska is in this season. Entering the first true season of their rebuild, the Flames entered the 2026-27 campaign expected to be among the NHL’s worst teams. A big part of that has come due to the fact that GM Craig Conroy elected to trade several key veterans such as Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar, Nazem Kadri, and Blake Coleman. That has led some, including former Flames head coach Darryl Sutter, to suggest Huska shouldn’t shoulder the blame for Calgary’s struggles through the first eight games of the season. “Ryan’s a really good coach for that group,” Sutter said during an appearance on The Raw Mike Richards Show. “He’s come up through the organization, he knows a lot of the guys […] I think he’s a really good coach. He’s fundamental with what he wants to get done, and he’s very clear in what he wants to get done.” Sutter, who had Huska as an assistant coach during his most recent stint with the Flames, also explained why winning can be particularly difficult for coaches tasked with developing a young roster. “[The] number one [priority] is the development of those young guys, and fortunately, unfortunately, whatever you want to call it, some of that’s got to happen at the NHL level. It’s hard to win when you’re developing, say, five, six, seven guys.” That reality should give Huska some breathing room as the Flames navigate what is expected to be a difficult season. While the results haven’t been pretty, the main objective heading into the year was never to rack up wins. With development taking priority over immediate results, Huska appears to be getting some time to work through the growing pains of a rebuilding roster. For now, at least, it appears the Flames aren’t considering making a change behind the bench.

Free-Agent Patrik Laine Heading West?

Patrik Laine is reportedly getting very close to signing a new contract, and he could be heading to sunny California in the process. According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Kings have been in contact with Laine of late, and are considering offering him a contract. Pierre LeBrun on Early Trading about Laine: There are other smaller things that the Kings have batted around. I'm told they've talked about Patrick Laine, for example, who remains unsigned. Could he help their power play? I don't know if they'll end up going that route, but certainly he'd be a cheap option. - 10/20 Laine had been skating in Florida, so early on this summer there was plenty of speculation the Panthers or Lightning were going to offer him an incentive-ladened contract, but that hasn't been the case at all. The Kings make a ton of sense because they are desperate for offense. The Kings have scored just 17 goals in 7 games and have just one win. Who knows what Laine has in the tank, as he's been away from NHL action for quite some time. After dealing with a core injury last season with the Montreal Canadiens, he was healthy to return to action in January, but the Habs were rolling, and they didn't want to disrupt their team's chemistry. Laine wound up sitting out the rest of the season, and made it very clear he's not interested in heading back to Montreal. In 537 career games, spanning across the Winnipeg Jets, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Canadiens, Laine has posted 224 goals, and 422 points. If he's healthy and getting power-play minutes, Laine is capable of scoring 30 goals in his sleep. Entering this week, the Kings had three NHL contract slots open, and very little cap space, so they'll have to move someone to season ending LTIR to make room, or else someone's getting waived.

Report: Up To 10 Teams In Talks With Red Wings On Simon Edvinsson

The Detroit Red Wings continue to have trade talks about Simon Edvinsson with up to 10 teams, including the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, even though interim GM Shawn Horcoff still wants to sign him. “Horcoff still wants to sign him and is still holding out hope there, but he continues to have trade talks,” LeBrun said on Tuesday’s Insider Trading. “There are up to 10 teams that continue to be involved in these talks, and I’m told the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins are among the teams that are interested.” Edvinsson’s Camp Sees A Trade As The Logical Step LeBrun reported that Edvinsson and his agent, J.P. Barry, met face-to-face with Horcoff late last week without a breakthrough, and he said Edvinsson “feels this has dragged out so long that the most logical option for him is probably a trade.” Edvinsson hasn’t formally requested a trade, LeBrun said, though Elliotte Friedman reported earlier this month that he prefers one. Horcoff said October 14, “I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson. I want to keep him,” and LeBrun’s update suggests Detroit is keeping its options open while that stance holds. Edvinsson is 23, was the sixth overall pick in 2021, had 25 points in 72 games last season while averaging a career-high 22:21 a night, and hasn’t played this season as an unsigned restricted free agent. He has until December 1 to sign, or he’ll be ineligible to play in the NHL for the rest of the season. The Market And The Price LeBrun reported October 8 that at least 10 teams had inquired about Edvinsson, including Boston, and the new wrinkle is that those talks are described as ongoing and that San Jose is among the interested clubs. If Detroit does trade him, LeBrun said teams should look to the Mikhail Sergachev, Noah Dobson, and Bowen Byram trades as the best comparables for what a young defenseman costs. David Pagnotta reported earlier this month that Edvinsson is seeking a maximum seven-year deal worth between $9 million and $11 million a year, and there has been described a sizeable gap between the sides. LeBrun has also reported that ownership gave Horcoff full authority to finalize an extension, so a deal remains possible before the December 1 deadline.

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
