Sri Lanka trumps Brook’s record double century to beat England by 2 wickets in cricket tri-series

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) — Sri Lanka trumped Harry Brook’s record double century Thursday with the second-highest successful run chase ever in one-day international cricket history to hand England a second successive defeat in the Pakistan tri-series. Brook’s 116-ball 202 propelled England to 429 for four. Sri Lanka beat England with second-highest ODI chase

Janith Liyanage smashed a six off the penultimate ball as Sri Lanka completed the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, scoring 430-8 to beat England in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Needing eight to win off the last over, Sri Lanka lost two wickets to paceman Josh Tongue, but Liyanage kept his cool to achieve an astonishing victory and overshadow Harry Brook's record-setting knock. The England captain hit the fastest-ever ODI double hundred, making 202 off 116 balls to propel his team to a mammoth 429-4 after they were put in to bat. South Africa hold the record for the highest ODI chase, knocking off a target of 435 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006. Batters thoroughly dominated in Rawalpindi as Brook also hit the first ODI double century by an England player. However, Sri Lanka proved up to the challenge as Pavan Rathnayake scored 130, with Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both making 97. Liyanage then led them over the line with a blistering 61 not out off 27 balls. Sri Lanka slid to 24-2 before Rathnayake and Avishka set about transforming the innings, putting on 166 for the third wicket. Rathnayake then combined with Shanaka to lift the tempo with a rapid 133-run stand off just 79 balls, to give Sri Lanka genuine hope. Rathnayake hit 15 fours and three sixes while Shanaka's blazing knock featured eight sixes and six fours, as Sri Lanka delivered a powerful response to Brook's earlier masterclass. Sri Lankan skipper Kusal Mendis was delighted at the victory. "I'm very happy as a captain," said Mendis. "Everyone believed we can do it. Every day we talk about showing the character in team meetings, and it's about showing we can get any score." Brook was full of praise for Sri Lanka. "Incredible game of cricket, both teams were exceptional. They played exceptional cricket to knock off 400," said Brook, downplaying his double hundred. "It was a nice innings but being on the losing side it has no value whatsoever in my eyes." Brook clobbered 10 sixes and 21 fours as England posted a first 400-plus ODI total in Pakistan. He reached 200 in 114 balls, beating the previous fastest double century in ODIs, by Shubman Gill (117 balls) for India against West Indies last month. Brook was joined in the fireworks by Joe Root, who scored a 66-ball 69 and became the first England batter to complete 8,000 runs, in his 197th one-day international. Brook was dismissed off the final delivery, caught off paceman Liyanage, but not before helping England add 156 runs in the last 10 overs. Opener Tom Banton set the tone with a 51-ball 50 and Will Jacks was 66 not out with three sixes and eight fours. The day looked as if it would surely belong to history-maker Brook, but Sri Lanka had other ideas as the previous highest ODI total at a Pakistan venue of 375-3 was easily surpassed. Pakistan, who beat Sri Lanka and England in their two games, will face England in Lahore on Sunday in the next match in the tri-series. (AFP) Edited by Cecil Wong

Bournemouth stun 10-man AC Milan in Europa League

Bournemouth pulled off a sensational 3-0 home victory over 10-man AC Milan on Thursday to make it three wins from their opening three games in the Europa League. Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier converted first-half penalties to put Bournemouth firmly in control against AC Milan, one of Europe's leading clubs. Milan goalkeeper and skipper Mike Maignan was red carded early on for a foul on Tyler Adams and his side never fully recovered. Amine Adli scored a sublime 84th free-kick to make it 3-0, the Premier League side having opened their inaugural Europa League campaign with victory at Real Sociedad followed by a 3-0 home win over Sturm Graz last week. Bournemouth, who became the first English club since Sunderland in 1973/74 to win the first three European fixtures in their history, will now face Sparta Prague and Celta Vigo in November. "It means a lot. We came off two victories, so that gave us a good feeling for this game," Kluivert told TNT Sports. "We trust ourselves. It doesn't matter who we play against. We know what we're capable of, and I think we showed that today." Bournemouth's Premier League rivals Crystal Palace rebounded from a 5-0 weekend thrashing by Brighton to claim a 2-2 draw with Beskitas in Istanbul, while Scottish giants Celtic suffered a third successive defeat, going down 2-1 to Celta Vigo. Bayer Leverkusen, however, also made it three straight wins with a Jonas Hofmann double earning a 2-0 away win at OFI Crete as both Juventus and Sunderland lost ground in Thursday's third matchday. The once mighty Hungarian side Ferencvaros kept pace with Leverkusen on nine points thumping Portuguese outfit Torreense 4-1, while Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise won 4-0 against Israeli outfit Hapoel Be'er Sheva. Saint-Gilloise, Sunderland and Juve all have seven points from three games. Juventus thought they had come from behind to beat French side Rennes but had their late 'winner' ruled out for a marginal offside. Zeki Celik put Juve ahead after five minutes only for a poor clearance 10 minutes later allowing Musa Al-Taamari to poke home an equaliser. Jut before the break Boulaye Dia put the visitors ahead. Juventus made it 2-2 thanks to a handball and a spot-kick transformed by Nick Woltemade before VAR provided the biggest talking point, disallowing Jhon Lucumi's 88th minute strike. Clad in a new all-pink kit, Sunderland were left kicking themselves after a 1-1 draw in Poland. The Blacks Cats took a second minute lead in Poznan thanks to Timur Tutierov and dominated the game without being able to close out the win. With two home games remaining, however, the second round still beckons for Regis Le Bris' side. Marseille went down 1-0 to Sturn Graz while Lyon suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Hoffenheim. In the Conference League, former Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from the penalty spot in Trabzonspor's 2-0 win over Scottish side Hearts. Brighton were held to a 0-0 draw at Czech side Jablonec, as Monaco thumped Freiburg 3-0 and Ajax snuck a 2-0 win over Atalanta. (AFP) Edited by Cecil Wong

How the news feed works

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
