IND v WI 2026: “Combination of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma,” R Ashwin’s rich praise for Shubman Gill after heroics in Guwahati ODI

India registered a series-clinching 8-wicket victory over the West Indies in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday (September 30). Chasing a daunting target of 406 runs, Shubman Gill provided the hosts with a blistering start as he added 255 runs for the opening wicket with Rohit Sharma. The Indian captain reached his 11th ODI century off just 62 balls. While Rohit was dismissed after scoring 101 off 75 balls – his 35th ODI ton, Gill held the one end and stayed unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls to take India over the line with 39 deliveries to spare. It was only the second time in ODI history that a team had hunted down a target of 400 or more, following South Africa’s iconic 438-run chase against Australia in 2006. After helping India pull off their biggest ever chase in ODIs, Gill drew rich praise from the legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who hailed the skipper as a combination of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. “I’ll say it straight: Shubman Gill is a great combination of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. I refuse to agree, but I’m saying it was very princely. This is the first time I’m using this name. What a brilliant innings it was. Especially that shot where he jumped out and played a cut against the fast bowler over point. He is an exceptional player. Virat Kohli doesn’t play the cut and sweep that much against spinners, and there is no need to play the sweep against fast bowlers. Shubman plays both shots,” Ashwin said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel. “Rohit Sharma is very good at using the back foot against both spinners and fast bowlers. Shubman does both. That is very rare. Rohit Sharma plays the inside-out shot, Virat Kohli also plays it, and Shubman plays it too. Virat Kohli uses his feet but doesn’t hit the ball that hard from there. Rohit Sharma uses his feet and hits big sixes. Gill does the same. So, in many ways, he matches them shot for shot,” he added. Just like Kohli and Rohit, Ashwin highlighted that the 50-over format brings out the ultimate version of Gill’s rare and multi-faceted skill set. He emphasized that if given enough matches, Gill could potentially break major batting records in ODI cricket. “This is his best format. We always say that we can talk about Virat Kohli in Test cricket. Virat Kohli’s best format is ODI cricket. Rohit’s best format is ODI cricket. In that line, Shubman Gill’s best format is also ODI cricket. I really hope ODI cricket stays on because Shubman Gill will put the ODI records of many great cricketers in danger, the way he is batting and the combination of skills he has,” he remarked. Shubman Gill will next be in action during the inconsequential third ODI against the West Indies, scheduled for October 3 in New Chandigarh.

IND v WI 2026: “Not batting at his best,” Ashwin’s bold remark on Rohit Sharma despite veteran opener’s ton in 2nd ODI

India pulled off their highest-ever successful run chase in ODI history by tracking down a massive target of 406 runs against the West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday (September 30). With this remarkable victory, the Men in Blue gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series with a game to spare. While skipper Shubman Gill headlined the chase by smashing 223* off just 133 deliveries, his opening partner Rohit Sharma also played a significant knock of 101 runs in 75 balls. In doing so, Rohit notched up his 35th ODI century and crossed the landmark of 12,000 ODI runs. Despite his second three-figure score in last three outings, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reckons Rohit Sharma is not batting at his best. Ashwin pointed out that Rohit is trying to play the pickup pull shot more frequently on good-length deliveries coming into the line of the stumps, leading to missed connections. “If you ask me, is Rohit batting at his best? Maybe not. He is not batting at his best, but he is still that good. I’m saying this after noticing just one thing: he is not batting at his best because, sometimes, when the ball is coming into the line of the stumps, especially the length deliveries, he is trying to play that pickup shot and missing it quite often. He is getting beaten even on those balls that are landing on a good length,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. Ashwin warned fast bowlers can exploit his slight difficulty with back-of-a-length deliveries around the stumps. He also highlighted that Rohit’s shoulder turns slightly and his body shape shifts toward the leg side, differing from his peak form where he remains balanced and in shape to the ball. “That is one area that some of the better fast bowlers will be able to exploit because he is having a little bit of trouble with back-of-a-length deliveries around the stumps. That is why his shoulder is turning slightly and his shape is getting affected, and he is looking towards the leg side a little bit. Rohit Sharma in good form stays in shape to the ball, and whenever the ball comes into his hitting zone, he hits it. He is looking for the pickup pull more often now, which is why I’m saying he is probably not batting at his best,” Ashwin added. Rohit Sharma declined to explain his unique high-knee celebration after reaching his century in Guwahati ODI, stating the gesture had a deeply personal meaning Reflecting on his celebration, Ashwin claimed that Rohit's passionate high jumps and fist-pumping were a direct reply to the critics and selectors who questioned his fitness and age ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. “He celebrated because he has broken down everyone’s opinion, one by one. Everyone was saying that he couldn’t make it to the 2027 World Cup, and he is breaking that down one by one. And I really enjoyed watching that celebration because, you know, it was like a child celebrating. If, after reaching this age, after so many years and with so much experience, you can still celebrate like that, it tells all of us how much it means to him. Rohit Sharma’s innings yesterday was exceptional, unbelievable, and he knows what he is doing,” Ashwin remarked. Rohit Sharma will next be in action during the inconsequential third ODI against the West Indies, scheduled for October 3 in New Chandigarh.

How the news feed works

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
