“It’s going to benefit us as a group,” Root backs Pietersen's appointment as specialist mentor for England’s white-ball teams

Joe Root has strongly endorsed Kevin Pietersen's appointment as a specialist mentor for England’s white-ball teams, highlighting the profound impact latter had on him during his early international days. Addressing the media on the eve of England's third Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston, Root looked back at his first international tour to India in 2012-13, sharing how he used to "buddy up" and closely shadow the senior batter in the nets. “I enjoyed him as a senior player coming into the team. He was someone that I would spend, you know, I’d be shadowing all the time on that first tour of India in particular,” Root told reporters on Tuesday (September 8). “I’d try and bat with him in the nets, watch how he practised, watch how he did things, ask him for advice. And he was really open, really honest, very helpful in terms of how to get the best out of my game against spin.” Root noted that Pietersen was exceptionally open, honest, and helpful in teaching him vital techniques on how to play against spin bowling. The England Test captain believes that bringing that same direct, honest insight and deep tactical understanding into the coaching setup will immensely benefit the current group of players as they prepare for the upcoming white-ball assignments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup. “If he can offer that kind of stuff in a coaching capacity as he did as a senior player, then I think it’s really going to benefit us as a group,” Root said. “So I’m really excited to work with him.” Kevin Pietersen has returned to the England cricket setup 12 years after his international career ended acrimoniously. However, Root emphasized that the team's environment has shifted completely since 2014, and Pietersen's forthright opinions and vast batting knowledge will serve as strong assets for a younger generation of players. “Yeah, I think you want people to give their honest opinion,” Root said when asked about Pietersen’s reputation as a controversial figure. “Why would you get involved if you didn’t want them to give us insight into the game? He’s very knowledgeable, you know, very good understanding of batting in particular. And he’s got a huge amount of energy. So I think he’s going to be great for the group.” Pietersen will join the England white-ball team, coached by Brendon McCullum, for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka, which begins in England later this month. In addition, the 46-year-old will participate in the white ball tours to Australia and South Africa this winter. Next summer, he will rejoin the sides for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and the home series against Pakistan and New Zealand. “I am immensely proud to have been asked to help this team on their journey to win a World Cup in South Africa. Putting on the England uniform again for the first time since 2014 is a profound honor and a deeply special moment. We have an incredibly talented white-ball squad, and I am excited to get in the trenches and work relentlessly hard with these players to maximize their potential. To be a part of Brendon’s think tank over the next 12 months is a fantastic opportunity, and I cannot wait to get started,” Pietersen said in a statement.

ENG v PAK 2026: “It’s not rocket science,” Wasim Akram admits he expected Pakistan’s 3-0 whitewash against England in Tests

Wasim Akram has delivered a scathing assessment of the Pakistan cricket setup, stating that he fully expected a 3-0 series whitewash against England even before the tour commenced. Following decisive defeats at Headingley and Lord's, which handed England an unassailable 2-0 lead, the legendary fast bowler outlined systemic failures that stretch far beyond individual player performances on the field. “I knew before the series we were going to lose 3-0 to England. Our batting is struggling, our bowling is below average and our fielding is worse. It’s not rocket science,” Akram told The Athletic. Akram emphasized that the root causes of the crisis run much deeper than the current national squad, exposing structural defects within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) infrastructure. He further cited that the current players represent the absolute ceiling of the available talent pool because the development structures underneath them are virtually non-existent. “But in Pakistan we have a saying: ‘You can only clap with two hands’. I get asked all the time, ‘Can you do something to help Pakistan cricket?’ But the issues are a lot deeper. These are the top players, there’s nothing else there. The systems aren’t there below that. The first-class structure domestically has been all over the place the last few years and there’s no consistency, no patience,” Akram said. Wasim Akram also criticized the fanbase for lack of patience, noting that whenever the national team loses, the immediate reaction is to tear down the entire system and start over, a cycle that has left nothing substantial to rebuild upon. “That dribbles down to the fans, too. They see the team lose and they want to rip it all up, too. We’ve done that so many times and now there is nothing really left,” he remarked. In the wake of these losses, the PCB enacted a massive mid-series purge, sending seven squad players home and sacking head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed alongside bowling coach Umar Gul. The white-ball setup, led by Mike Hesson, has been brought in on short notice to take charge of the third and final Test, slated to begin on September 9 at Edgbaston. The revamped squad now includes a mix of domestic talent, calling up Saim Ayub, Abdullah Fazal, and five uncapped players.

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
