Serena, Venus Williams lose 3rd-set tiebreak in US Open return - ESPN

NEW YORK — «Welcome to the Williams Show,» read one fan's sign in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night, as Venus and Serena Williams took the court for their doubles match, a quarter-century after first facing each other in the 2001 US Open final. A quarter-century of playing pro tennis at a top level — at any level — is not a very common thing. And even more incredibly, the Williams sisters, now ages 46 and 44, showed they can still come agonizingly close to beating a top team that is cumulatively around half their age. In a three-set thriller that delighted a packed and vocal evening crowd, the sisters fell short at the end, blowing a 5-0 lead in the final 10-point tiebreak to lose to Hao-Ching Chan of Taiwan and Maya Joint of Australia, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (10-7). So it was indeed quite a thrilling show — even the sisters themselves, narrowly defeated, walked off with smiles on their faces, though they declined to speak to the media afterward. • Serena/Venus Williams: First appearance in doubles together at a major since 2022 US Open | were supposed to play together in Serena's return at Wimbledon this year but Serena pulled out after suffering a knee injury in singles against Maya Joint • Sisters led the third-set tiebreak 5-0 before dropping 10 of the next 12 points • Their second major doubles match to go to a deciding-set tiebreak (2009 French Open Round 3, lost to Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Nadia Petrova) • Fall to 31-3 in the first round of majors as doubles partners • Match lasted 3 hours and 2 minutes • Maya Joint & Hao-Ching Chan advance to face Nicole Fossa Huergo & Tamara Korpatsch in Round 2 on Sunday — ESPN Research «It was an amazing match,» Joint said. «They played really well, and I think just the

Embattled Sabalenka books spot in last 16 at US Open

Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka out-gunned Kamilla Rakhimova 6-3, 6-4 to lead the way into the US Open round of 16 on Friday. The world number one from Belarus fired 29 winners, with 10 aces, and didn't face a break point, but that didn't tell the entire tale of match that saw 92nd-ranked Rakhimova push Sabalenka hard in a second-set slugfest. "She played incredible tennis, she really pushed me so hard in the second set," Sabalenka said. "I'm super happy that I was able to close this match in straight sets because she's a fighter." Sabalenka, whose world number one ranking is under threat in New York, got off to a strong start, breaking Rakhimova in her first service game and holding her own serve with ease. Sabalenka didn't miss a first serve until the seventh game of the contest, pocketing the first set in 35 minutes. But Uzbekistan's Rakhimova dialed up the power in the second set, which featured mammoth service holds from each player before Sabalenka gained the crucial break for a 5-4 lead. Sabalenka, who must repeat as champion to have a chance of remaining number one, next faces either 15th-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider or 96th-ranked American Taylor Townsend. Shnaider knocked Sabalenka out of the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in June. Sabalenka hasn't won a title since her impressive Indian Wells-Miami double in March. As she tries to join Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova as the only women to win three straight US Open titles she said she's trying to tune out expectations -- positive and negative. "I completely shut down the noise from outside," she said. "I'm trying to focus on myself. I know if I'm focused on myself, if I'm pushing myself really hard I know I will have my chances on court." How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
