A town in Alberta is getting a new multisport field and pickleball courts

Get your cleats ready, because a new multisport field in Sylvan Lake is nearly finished, with the facility set to open next spring for football, soccer, and lacrosse. According to an Oct. 27 update from the Town of Sylvan Lake, crews have installed the turf, shock pad, and goal posts. Remaining work includes fencing, landscaping and trees, an officials’ shelter, and completing the parking lot and surrounding roads. Construction on the pickleball courts is now expected to begin next spring after rain delayed the project throughout this year’s construction season. Part of the ongoing development at Pogadl Park, the field is one of several recreation amenities planned for the complex, which has been under construction in phases since 2017. Its first phase included construction of a 1,184-seat baseball stadium, which is now home to the Western Canadian Baseball League’s (WCBL) Sylvan Lake Gulls. The new multisport field and the park’s pickleball courts are both expected to open in Spring 2027. Modern Invention or Ancient Habit: How Old Are Team Sports, Really?

Football, rugby and lacrosse all received their first agreed rulebooks in the 19th century, which can make team sports look like a modern invention. The ancient record tells another story, from rubber balls in Mexico to kickball at the Chinese court.

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
