The Eagles never made it back to the Super Bowl in Andy Reid’s tenure before he left following a down season in 2012.

After Lurie’s bold hire of Chip Kelly from the college football ranks failed to pan out, he went back to Reid’s coaching tree and hired Doug Pederson, a former Eagles quarterback and coach who had been working as Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator under Reid.

Just two years into Pederson’s coaching tenure, he and general manager Howie Roseman had built a juggernaut. But it all threatened to come apart when, with Philadelphia’s playoff spot all but secure, quarterback and NFL MVP candidate Carson Wentz tore his ACL in a late-season game against the Los Angeles Rams.

That paved the way for one of the most unlikely underdog stories in recent NFL history. Backup quarterback Nick Foles took over and led the Eagles through the playoffs, including a blowout win over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game.

But Foles saved his best for last — he outdueled Brady in the Super Bowl, temporarily denying the future Hall of Famer his sixth championship ring and winning Super Bowl MVP.

That was thanks to 373 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and a touchdown catch on what has been immortalized as the “Philly Special,” one of the most iconic single plays in Super Bowl history.

Result: Eagles 41, Patriots 33
