Football fever has delivered plenty of friendly rivalry at Clarence Estate Residential and Home Care, with residents putting their tipping skills to the test throughout the season.

A total of 27 participants took part in the AFL tipping competition, giving residents something to look forward to each week as they followed their rankings and kept an eye on the leader board.

When the final tips were counted, Helen Barnard emerged as the overall winner, followed by John Walker in second place and Ross Stuart in third.

Ms Barnard, Mr Walker and Mr Stuart were each presented with a trophy to recognise their efforts, while the remaining participants were also acknowledged with medals for their finishing positions.

Occupational therapy assistant Janelle Smith said the competition had been a popular weekly activity for the residents.

“It gives them something to look forward to each week,” she said.

“They enjoy the friendly competition and once they put their tips in each week, we put up a poster of who is winning the competition.

“They love coming down, checking the poster and their rank.”

The suspense was kept alive during the final weeks of the AFL season, with the leader board taken down so residents would have to wait until the end to discover who had won.

Ms Smith said the competition was wrapped up with a celebration bringing residents, staff and family members together to reflect on the football season.

“We have a wind-up where we get some family members to come in and they share food and drinks and talk about the football season,” she said.

“We usually put on videos of highlights of the season so it brings them all together, which is nice and it’s a great community event.”
