Mike Elko's Recruiting Message Comes at a Critical Time for Texas A&M

The Texas A&M Aggies are struggling through a disappointing season, but their success on the recruiting trail suggests there's still plenty of belief in the program's future.
Mike Elko's Recruiting Message Comes at a Critical Time for Texas A&M

There's a strange divide between what Texas A&M looks like on Saturdays and what some of the nation's best high school players apparently believe it will look like in the years ahead. Mike Elko's Aggies are 4-4, staring at another disappointing SEC campaign, yet the program holds the nation's No. 1 recruiting class for 2027, according to 247Sports.

That's quite a contrast. And while recruiting rankings don't win football games, dismissing the faith those prospects have placed in Elko because of eight frustrating Saturdays would be a mistake.

During Wednesday's SEC teleconference, Elko was asked how he has maintained the confidence of recruits while the team struggles.

“I think obviously it's a lot of conversation, it's a lot of communication, it's a lot of relationships,” Elko said. “Recruiting is about so much more than results on the field, and I think a lot of people still believe in the trajectory of this program, and that's obviously what we're selling.”

It's not a particularly difficult argument to understand. Texas A&M went 8-5 in Elko's first season in 2024, then improved to 11-2 and reached the College Football Playoff in 2025. There's a recent history of progress here rather than some distant promise of what the Aggies might someday become.

That history matters when coaches are sitting across from recruits and their families. An ugly October doesn't necessarily invalidate the foundation that made College Station an attractive destination in the first place.

There is also a reasonable argument that 2026 has been an unfortunate detour. Offensive coordinator Collin Klein left to become Kansas State's head coach, and Marcel Reed's regression has made replacing him a far more complicated task than Texas A&M anticipated.

Of course, those explanations aren't absolutions. Elko hired the staff responsible for managing the transition, and the responsibility for an offense that has repeatedly failed to deliver ultimately belongs to the people running the program.

Elko acknowledged another piece of the problem Wednesday, saying, “We're just having a hard time finding consistency right now.”

Recruits evidently believe that inconsistency isn't permanent. Texas A&M's class ranks ahead of Notre Dame, Oregon and Miami in the 247Sports standings, an encouraging indication that the Aggies haven't lost their appeal despite the turbulence.

But there's a difference between persuading teenagers that better days are coming and actually delivering those better days. The former has gone remarkably well for Elko. The latter has become the central question surrounding his program.
