Moses Itauma to announce ‘first step back’ opponent in coming weeks as January comeback confirmed

Promoter Frank Warren has provided an update on the ring return of Moses Itauma following his defeat to Filip Hrgovic back in August.

Itauma dominated his clash with Hrgovic for eight rounds but the fact that he had never fought beyond six in his career proved costly, as he ran out of steam and was cruelly dispatched by the granite-chinned Croatian in round nine in one of the most dramatic moments of 2026.

Whilst Hrgovic has achieved superstardom in his home nation, British fight fans have begun to question whether Itauma is still the future of the heavyweight division, as many had labelled him to be prior to his shock shortcoming.

Warren is refusing to let the hot prospect dwell on the loss though, and has instead revealed that Itauma will return to action in January.

Speaking with Sky Sports Boxing, the Queensberry promoter detailed a plan to get his fighter ‘back into the title mix’ and told that Itauma’s comeback opponent will be unveiled ‘within the next couple of weeks’.

“Moses, his team and I met last week, he will fight in January. We will be announcing his opponent in the next couple of weeks and he wants to get back into the swing of things.

“He needs to get back after his last fight – which was a very, very exciting fight – he won every round but Filip Hrgovic was tough and he stayed there and came away with the belt.

“Moses knows what he should have done, what he felt he should have done and now he has got to put that into practice next year.

“So, January will be the first step back and then he wants to be in that mix, fighting for these belts – and it will happen.”

Itauma remains well-ranked with the sanctioning bodies despite losing his undefeated record in August, positioned as the WBC and WBO #5, whilst he is rated at #7 with the IBF and WBA.
