On the..

“By unanimous decision, in the red corner!”

Recently, after the women’s 51kg boxing final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Wu Yu from Guizhou was speaking to reporters in the mixed zone. When the announcement of the women’s 60kg final result came over the speakers, Wu Yu momentarily lost focus and turned toward the arena.

Standing there was her longtime friend, Guizhou boxer Yang Chengyu, whom she has known since they were teenagers. In the women’s 60kg boxing final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Yang Chengyu lost to Lin Yuting of Chinese Taipei to claim the silver medal.

“She is an outstanding athlete. In recent years, I’ve seen her gradually find her form and keep pushing herself forward, step by step.” Speaking about Yang Chengyu, Wu Yu sees more than just her results in the ring. She also sees the resilience Yang has shown in the face of difficulties. “Her determination to keep fighting even when she is going through tough times is something I need to learn from.” Along the way, the two have been more than teammates fighting side by side. They have also witnessed each other’s growth.

Starting out in Guizhou, Wu and Yang have kept moving forward, trading punches at competitions big and small before eventually stepping onto the Asian Games stage together. Along the way, they have become a source of strength for each other.

“Wu Yu and I have known each other for more than ten years, and we are very close. She has helped me a lot.” Yang Chengyu said Wu Yu has spent more time working with Raul, the Cuban coach of the Chinese boxing team, giving her a deeper understanding of the training and technical requirements. When Yang communicates with the coach, however, some details can be difficult to fully convey through translation. Wu Yu would then explain them again from her own perspective. “That helped me make progress faster.” Such seemingly small acts of support are woven into their day-to-day training, becoming part of the way the two have grown together.

On the Asian Games stage, every bout has a winner and a loser. But once they step out of the ring, they understand better than anyone what it has taken for each of them to come this far. “I’m really grateful to have her by my side,”Yang Chengyu said softly, slowing down as she spoke, as if she had carried those words in her heart for a long time.

For Wu Yu and Yang Chengyu, perhaps this more than decade-long friendship captures another precious side of sport: on the road to your dreams, you always have someone walking alongside you.
