Tassie shock as AFL’s 19th club cites ‘player behaviour, standards’ while axing inaugural captain

Tasmania has parted ways with their VFL captain Robbie Fox, just over a year out from the Devils’ inaugural season in the AFL.

The Mercury’s James Bresnehan reported on Tuesday afternoon that the 33-year-old would not be offered a contract for the 2027 season, citing “a range of factors” including some expectations regarding player behaviour.

“The club can confirm that Robbie Fox will not be offered a playing contract with Tasmania Devils in 2027,” a club spokesperson told The Mercury.

“This decision follows consideration of a range of factors including the future direction of our football program as we continue to prioritise the development of emerging talent ahead of our entry into AFL and AFLW in 2028.

“The club’s expectations regarding player behaviour and adherence to our standards were also considered as part of this decision.

“We thank Robbie for his contribution in our inaugural year as a VFL player and leader.”

The ABC’s Chris Rowbottom reported Fox’s axing was linked to an incident at a Hobart pub two weeks ago.

“Fox is understood to have been removed from the premises after becoming drunk and disorderly,” he tweeted.

Fox was born in Penguin, Tasmania and played 105 games at AFL level across nine seasons at Sydney as a defender. He was delisted by the Swans in August last year.

The Devils announced one-year deals for Nick Williams, Zach Adams, Harry Elmer and Maddox Iverach at midday on Tuesday.
