“Three in a row is rare in any sport,” Ravens coach Kevin Brown said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the girls. They showed up today. Westview played out of their minds.
We had a great match. ” The doubles team of Meera Pant and Elena Zhu delivered a 6-1 win to secure Canyon Crest’s 10th point and clinch its seventh Open Division Championship in the last eight events.
“We actually didn’t know that it was the 10th point,” said Pant, who also secured a 6-0 win over Maya Spinney and Ashley Iverson. “I was very confused. Everyone was watching us, and then when we won that winning point, everyone was cheering. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, we were the winning match.
’ I think that is really important, keeping your head down, on your game and not let anything else distract you. ” Pant and Zhu won their first match, 7-5, against Elizabeth Dang and Aria Shah after the other five matches had already wrapped up and some of the second matches were already underway.
“I was very in the moment,” Zhu said. “I was trying my hardest because I knew it was really important. ”“It seemed like at the time, we really needed that point,” Browns said.
“I said that and everyone heard that. And they’re like, ‘Yeah. ’ We’re playing for each other. We’re not playing for any other reason than we want to win that game.
” Also in doubles, Kayva and Keshavi Patel won two of their three matches, including a 6-1 victory over Spinney and Iverson, to give the Ravens their 11th and final point. They opened with a 6-3 win over Brielle Austin and Natalie Trzoss. In singles, Minerva Toda won two of her three matches, both in 6-4 fashion over Westview’s Mia Sohaey and Estelle Liang.
However, Toda could not take down Westview’s Victoria Wang, who won all three of her singles matches. She defeated Annabelle Halabo, 6-3, Kylie Halabo, 6-1 and Toda, 6-1.
“She is definitely a fighter,” Wolverines coach Renee Malcuit said of Wang. “I feel like for these next four years, everyone’s in trouble because she’s the one everyone’s going to want to get to. ”
